Water Resource Engineering - I
Maximum Marks: 50
Time Allowed: Three Hours

Q. NO. 1: (a) Describe and discuss a hydrological cycle with the help of a neat sketch. State water budget
equAtion and describe its significance in water resources planning.
(b)- Distinguish between (i) Infiltration capacity and infiltration rate (2, 2)

(ii) Actual and potential evapotranspiration

.(iii) Field capacity and permanent wilting point
(2x3 =-; 6)
. Q. No. 2: (a) A 6-h storm produced rainfall intensities of 7, 18, 25, 12, 10 and 3 mm/h in .successive in one-
hour intervals over a basin of 800 sq. km
. The resulting runoff is observed to be 2640 hectare- meters.
Determine 1 — index for the basin.
(3)
(b) Find out the ordinates of a storm hydrograph resulting from a 12-hr storm with rainfall of 3.5, 6.0 and 4.0
IP cm during subsequent 4-hr intervals. The ordinates of 4-hr unit hydrograph at 4-hr intervals are as follows:
0, 100,355, 510, 380, 300, 260, 225, 165, 120, 85, 55, 30, 22, 10, 0 [cumecs]
Assume an initial loss of 0.5 cm, an infiltration index of 0.25 cm/hr and a base flow of 10 cumecs.
• (7)
Q. No. 3: (a) The ordinates of unit hydrograph of 6-hr duration are given below at 2-hr intervals.
Time. (hr) 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14

(b) Draw the sketch of a synthetic unit hydrograph. Mention various component parameters on the sketch and
also provide theequation usedto compute those component parameters.
(3)
.Q. No. 4: (a) What do you mean by design flood? Why is its computation important fo,r water resources
projects? Enumerate various methods for estimating design flood.
11/ (b) Discuss various factors affecting runoff from a catchment. (5)
(5)
