Steam
Steam is one of the most common carriers of energy. Steam is utilized to drive turbines and provides heat for
industrial processes and communities. It drives locomotives and catapults airplanes from aircraft carriers.
The amount of energy contained is the product of heat and pressure.
In today’s high pressure steam systems with pressures in excess of 2000 psi and temperatures of more than
0
1000 F, quality products are essential to control the pressure and flow of the steam. Safety Relief Valves
ensure that steam is vented into the atmosphere before pressure peaks (higher than design conditions) can
cause damage to equipment.
A rapid flow of steam with a velocity up to the speed of sound discharges through the valve into the vent line
when the valve is actuated. The turbulent flow typically incurs severe vibration and dynamic loads that can
cause damage to structures and the valve if the vent pipe system is firmly connected to the building structure.
In some cases Drip-Pan Elbows are still utilized to separate the vent-line from
the valve, but limit the amount of back pressure, cause drafting through the
vent stack and include safety hazards such as steam blow-back into the building.
BOA SRV’s are designed so that the bellows are isolated from the flow and the pressure acts on the outside
surface. The external pressure stabilizes the bellows while allowing extremely low spring forces. The
complete encapsulation makes the unit practically indestructible. The internal, full flow liner prevents
unwanted turbulence and back-pressure.
Why Multi-Ply ?
BOA multi-ply bellows are ideal for dampening vibration. The superior flexibility ensures low forces and
moments at the Relief Valve and Vent Stack connecting points and allows for a compact design. The self
draining convolutions of the bellows prevent entrapment of flow media and other foreign matter.
Stainless Steel Type 321 bellows ensure enhanced corrosion resistance against most steam conditions.
Other alloys (Inconel 625, Incoloy 825, etc.) or wetted ply bellows are optional.
