INTRODUCTION

Definition of expository writing :


“Expository writing is a type of writing that
aims to explain or describe a topic in
clear and concise manner.”

Expository means intended to explain or describe something .


It has two important things e.g
 Narrative writing (to narrate)
 Persuasive writing (to convince)

EXAMPLE :
Essays, articles, research, papers, textbooks ,news and reports
are the example of expository writing .

PURPOSE OF EXPOSITORY WRITING:


PURPOSES :

 Its basic purpose is to give information to reader in logical


manner.
 It has also to give information to reader in organized manner.
 It involve presenting facts , evidence, argument and real
data.
Elements of expository writing:
The elements of expository writing are following :
 Clear thesis statement
 An opening paragraph
 Body part
 Smooth transition
 Conclusion

Write an expository paragraph on cricket?


“ Cricket is a popular game across the world . It is a bat and ball game
that is played in many countries such as Pakistan, India, Australia etc .
This game consists of two teams include 11 players in each team .”

How to write an expository writing ?


We can write an expository writing through this following steps:
 Introduction
 Three body paragraphs
 Conclusion

 Conduct extensive research on the topic at hand .
 Pick a structure for the essay.
 Formulate a thesis statement.
 Write an introductory paragraph with a book.
 Write the body paragraph .
 Summarize the expository essays .

Properties of expository writing


The properties of expository writing are following :
 There should be no personal opinion or emotion.
 It should be objective .
 It should be written in 3rd person .
 Always presented in logical way .
 Used to explain , describe, or give information about
topic , issues, subject or idea using facts

Characteristics of expository writing


The characteristics of expository writing are following :
1. DESCRIPTIVE

3. EXPLANATORY
4. ANALYTICAL
5. CLARITY
6. UNBIASED
7. IMPERSONAL
1. Descriptive :
It is one of the main feature of this essay.The science related
writing needs a background description. However, description should be
written about a thing or a process and it is usually done chronologically
or hierarchically.

2. Illustration :
Illustration is essential in this kind of essay and it should
be relevant . Explicit references need to be included to support the
theoretical points .
3.Impersonal :
The first person pronouns should not be used in this essay .

4. Explanatory :
The pertinent theory should be explained to support your
points added in the essay .To perceive results, the reasons are added
and the entire explanation should be supported with suitable information.

5. Analytical :
It is an imperative part of an expository writing as through
this process .The topic is broken down into parts in order to categorize.

6 . Clarity :
It is the important aspect of the expository writing as through
this process . The idea or thought of the author should be clearly
mentioned in the essay .

7. Unbiased :
The approach of the essay should be unbiased.

There are five types of expository writing .

ii. Processing Writing
iii. Cause and Effect
iv. Compare and Contrast
v. Problem and Solution
DESRIPTIVE WRITING :
This type of expository writing aims to describe something to the
readers in detail . It creates a vivid images in the readers mind by
providing sensory details and describing a particular person, place or thing .

This type of expository writing explains how to do something works. It

This type of expository writing describe how one steps
lead s to a result .Explain relationship between events such as how to

This type of expository writing examines the similarities and differences
Between two or more thing and subject .

 Compare and contrast between two different historical events

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION WRITING


This type of expository writing identifies problem and a solution ,
FOR EXAMPLE
 Corruption in Pakistan and its solution .
