SOUND_

We will solve numerical on sound.

Example – 1) A sound wave has a frequency of 2 kHz and wavelength 35 cm. How long will it take to
travel 1.5 km?
2) A person clapped his hands near a cliff and heard the echo after 5 s. What is the distance of the cliff
from the person if the speed of the sound, v is taken as 346 m s–1?
3) A ship sends out ultrasound that returns from the seabed and is detected after 3.42 s. If the speed of
ultrasound through seawater is 1531 m/s, what is the distance of the seabed from the ship?
4) A sound wave travels at a speed of 339 m/ s. If its wavelength is 1.5 cm, what is the frequency of
the wave?
5) A sonar device on a submarine sends out a signal and receives an echo 5 s later. Calculate the speed
of sound in water if the distance of the object from the submarine is 3625 m.
6) The speed of sound in air at 00 C is 332 m/s. If it increases at the rate of 0.6 m/s per degree, what
will be the temperature when the velocity has increased to 344 m/s?
7) Nita heard sound of lightning after 4 seconds of seeing it. What was the distance of the lightning
from her? (The velocity of sound in air is 340 m/s)
8) Sunil is standing between two walls. The wall closest to him is at a distance of 360 m. If he shouts,
he hears the first echo after 4 s and another after another 2 seconds.
We will complete the topics related to sound from previous LNs and explanation of above sums.

HW_
1. What is an echo? What factors are important to get a distinct echo?
2. What are the uses of ultrasonic sounds?
3. Illustrate the structure of the human ear and label the parts.
