BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

Excellent!

PART 2: APPLICATION

a) Quantity take-off and assessment of embodied energy and CO2 within

Revit and MS Excel

 GENERAL QUANTITY TAKE-OFF OF THE WHOLE BUILDING WITH REVIT

On the View tab click on Schedules and then Material Take-off. In the New Material Take-off
window choose Multi-Category and accept.
In the Material Take-off Properties window, add all the necessary parameters and place them
in the order with the Move Up and Move Down buttons.

Go to the Sorting/Grouping tab and sort the schedule by Category. Then check the Grand
totals box, if necessary, to obtain the total number of elements.

BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

Once the schedule is created, rename it by clicking on its name at the top of the table. Edit the
columns and rows using the icons on the Modify tab.

Comment [O1]:
Always include captions of Figures and use
them for cross-referencing.

These procedures are not relevant. This has

already been covered in the BIM
workbook. You should have presented final
output screenshots.

 QUANTITY TAKE-OFF OF ONE ELEMENT/MATERIAL WITH REVIT (exposed coloured

concrete)

Produce the material quantity take-off (exposed coloured concrete) with Revit.

 ENERGY AND CO2 ASSESSMENT WITH EXCEL

Export the material take-off from Revit to a txt file. Open the txt file in MS Excel.
P33509 – Advanced Construction Technology and BIM 4
BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

Add new columns for density, mass, embodied energy, embodied carbon, EE emissions and EC
emissions. Write the specific weight of concrete in the density column.

Search the Inventory of Carbon & Energy for the EE and EC intensities of concrete.
P33509 – Advanced Construction Technology and BIM 5
BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

Write the EE and EC intensity figures in the corresponding columns.

Obtain the mass of each element, by multiplying the volume by the density. Obtain the EE and
EC emissions by multiplying the mass column with the EE and EC intensity columns,
respectively.

b) Quantity take-off and planning process in Navisworks

 QUANTITY TAKE-OFF WITH NAVISWORKS

Open the Revit project in Navisworks.

In the Quantification Workbook, go to Substructure > Foundations > Standard Foundations.

Find the Wall Foundations in the Selection Tree window. Take off the foundations to the
quantification window.
P33509 – Advanced Construction Technology and BIM 9
BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

The output is as follows.

For Earthwork, change the Thickness of the element to match with the height of earth to
remove.

In the Volume column, change the formula from ModelVolume to ModelArea*Thickness.

Repeat the same process for all the building elements.

P33509 – Advanced Construction Technology and BIM 10
BIM DESIGN PROJECT BRIEF

Export the quantity take-off from Navisworks to MS Excel.

The output is as follows.

 PROJECT PLANNING WITH NAVISWORKS

Open the TimeLiner window. Add a task, name it and define the starting and ending dates.
Choose the elements on the Selection Tree window (left) and click on the Attached cell, and
then click Attach Current Selection.

Repeat the same process for all the building elements. The resulting program is shown below.

c) Differences between quantity take-off in Revit and Navisworks

The main differences between doing the quantity take-off in Revit and in Navisworks are:

 Navisworks can use formulas to quantify and allows the user to change the dimensions Comment [O3]: This can be done in
of the elements (thickness, height, width,…). Revit too.

Navisworks can also do 3D model take-offs (of 3D elements), but also 2D take-offs (2D Anyway,
elements) and virtual take-offs (elements that don’t exist in the model or the 2D plan). Another difference is the use of standard
measurement templates such as
UNIFORMAT in Navisworks, not Revit
