Kami Export - ISMAEL ALONSO-JUAREZ - brainSH - StudentWorksheet

The document discusses parts of the brain and their functions by having the reader explore an interactive 3D model of the brain and answer 25 related questions. It covers areas like the cerebral hemispheres, lobes, basal ganglia, cerebellum, cranial nerves, and specific conditions. Key parts mentioned include the corpus callosum, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, meninges, brain stem, hippocampus, hypothalamus, thalamus, and substantia nigra.

PARTS OF THE BRAIN – INTERNET SCAVENGER HUNT

A 3D DEPICTION OF ALL ITS PARTS AND FUNCTIONS
To view the 3D model and complete this scavenger hunt about the brain and its anatomy, go to the
following internet address: https://www.brainfacts.org/3d-brain#intro=true

Take a moment to follow the introductory prompts about the brain. You can explore all the features of
this site by clicking on the different tabs at the top (thinking, sensing & behaving, diseases & disorders,
etc.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. How much does the human brain weigh?

The brain weighs about three pounds

2. How many neurons does the brain contain?

The brain contains about 86 billion neurons

3. In the drop-down menu on the left of the screen, click on “right cerebral hemisphere” and read
the corresponding information. What functions are guided by this hemisphere of the brain?

The Human experience lives in the right hemisphere such as perception, language, and consciousness.

4. Now, select the “left cerebral hemisphere” in the drop-down menu. What is the corpus
callosum? The corpus callosum that is a thick white tissue that acts as a bridge that units the two brain hemisphere.

5. How many lobes are in each hemisphere?

Each Hemisphere is divided into four lobes.

6. What is the largest lobe of the cerebral cortex?

The largest lobe of the central cortex is the frontal lobe

7. List four parts of the parietal lobe.

Inferior parietal lobe, superior parietal lobe, precuneus, somatosensory cortex

8. What three membranes make up the meningeal layers?
The first layer being the dura mater (outermost layer), the arachnoid mater(web like cushionary layer),and finally the pia

mater(thin membrane wrap around the brain)

9. The midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblungata make up what part of the brain?

They are the three parts of the brain stem

10. What does the word “hippocampus” mean in Greek. What does this part of the brain do?

Its means ¨seahorse¨ in Greek which is responsible for long term memory and navigation.

11. The hypothalamus provides a link between what two systems?

The central nervous system and endocrine system

12. Which part of the brain is referred to as the “grand central station” for our sensory information?

The thalamus

13. What is CSF and what does it have to do with the ventricles?

the cerebrospinal fluid that protects and nourishes the brain and the ventricles are responsible for keeping the fluid

flowing and fresh

14. Name the six structures of the basal ganglia.
caudate nucleus, globus pallisdus, Nucleus Accumbens, putamen, substantia Nigra, subthalamic Nucleus

15. In this type of disease, the neurons in the substantia nigra are lost – which leads to problems
with initiating and maintaining intentional movement.
Parkinson's disease

16. What does the cerebellum do?

It makes adjustments to our motor skills which makes it much easier for our next movements
17. Name two specific things that your cerebellum allows you to do.

It helps improve out motor skills by detecting errors in movements and making minute adjustments

to the next movement.

18. Which part of the brain is the “biggest superhighway in the brain”?
The Vagus Nerve

19. The cranial nerves are a group of twelve nerves controlling muscles in the ___________ and
__________
They control muscles in the neck and head

20. The trochlear nerve regulates what type of movement?

It regulates eye movement and controls one of six eye movement

-------------CHALLENGE QUESTIONS------------

21. What is “broca’s area” of the brain responsible for?

Its responsible for complex speech network

22. The brain can be anatomically divided into what three parts?

The forebrain, midbrain and the hindbrain

23. What is the biggest part of the brain?

The biggest part of the brain would be the cerebrum

24. What kind of symmetry does the brain have?

It has bilaterally symmetrical

25. Which nerve controls the muscles involved in speaking?

The Hypoglossal Nerve
