Mechatronics: Lecture 1: Course Introduction & Revision

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field combining mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. It involves designing and manufacturing products like robots that contain mechanical and electrical systems controlled by software. The document provides examples of mechatronics products and discusses the basic components of mechatronics systems including sensors, actuators, controllers and power supplies.

Mechatronics

Lecture 1 : Course Introduction & Revision

What is Mechatronics?
• Mechatronics is a design process that includes a
combination of mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering, telecommunications engineering, control
engineering and computer engineering.
• Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of
engineering, that is to say, it rejects splitting
engineering into separate disciplines.
• Mechatronics :“the application of complex decision
making to the operation of physical systems”
(Auslander 1996).
• A mechatronics engineer unites the principles of
mechanics, electronics, and computing to generate a
simpler, more economical and reliable system
