Assignment

There is no doubt lesson planning is vital for a successful lesson.


How can we assure our lesson planning is coherent, varied, and
learner-centered so that it helps us to achieve the aims of the
lesson? How can the presence or absence of these characteristics
affect the class itself?

The characteristics of a successful lesson plan

Every teacher has their own way of organizing their lessons, so they can get their
students to understand the content of their class. Nevertheless, being able to develop
an effective and well-organized lesson plan that achieves its aims requires making sure
that it is coherent, varied, and learner-centered. Without them, the interest and learning
process of our students would be affected, and the rapport between teacher-students
most probably get involved within.

According to the dictionary, coherent means that “if an argument, set of ideas, or a plan
is coherent, it is clear and carefully considered, and each part of it connects or follows
in a natural or reasonable way” (Cambridge University, n.d.). So we assure that our
lesson plan is coherent when at the moment of being read the person understands our
objective and purpose. The presence of coherence in our lesson plan assures that
concepts are interconnected and there are no inconsistencies. For instance, if we have
a lesson about auxiliary Do and Does, we could do a quiz with questions and
alternatives related to the topic and don’t mix any other.

It is crucial to have a wide variety of exercises so the students can understand the
lessons in the best possible way and ask ourselves "What have my students learned in
this class that they did not know before?" (Harmer, 2012, p.177). In order to ensure the
variety of exercises and teaching methods, we should have a good class description
beforehand, since it gives us a clear idea of who our students are and helps us to make
our students achieve the class objectives. A good example for a varied lesson when
teaching about auxiliary Do and Does is showing the students a group of pictures so
they know which activities they can use and then ask them to complete a grammar
chart.

Finally, every lesson plan should be learner-centered. According to Weimer (2002),


learner-centered teaching focuses its attention on learning, which means what and how
the students are learning, the conditions under which they are doing it, whether they
are retaining and applying the learning, and how current learning helps them for the
future one. A learner-centered lesson plan engages students, encourages autonomy
and creates a good rapport. Its absence makes students take less responsibility and
get easily distracted. Some useful strategies are letting students explore and applying
cooperative learning activities. For example, when teaching about the auxiliary Do and
Does, we could do a cooperative personalisation activity and tell students to get in
groups and interview each other about what they do and don't do on vacations so they
can use the language.

In conclusion, the most important thing about lesson planning is that it supports
teachers to reach their objectives for each lesson and helps the students to learn the
language more effectively. To happen, it must be relevant, coherent, varied, learner-
centered and purposeful.
