1 PRACTICAL TASK. Computer Networks Basics

1. Objectives
1.1. Learn basic network concepts.
1.2. Learn how get main information about network and network settings.
1.3. Familiarize with basic networking tools, commands and methods.

2. Workshop: computers with Internet connection.

3. Practical task report


Report should conclude:
3.1. Practical task title and objectives.
3.2. Answers for all 4p. questions, providing issued commands and queries results and comments.

4. Workflow:
1. What is your computer‘s name, workgroup name , IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS
server IP address? To get this information you can use these commands:
• ipconfig /all
• net view
What does each mentioned paratemer mean?
Additionally you should describe each of these commands (ipconfig, net view).
2. Provide path from your PC to these addresses: www.cisco.com, www.mruni.eu, www.microsoft.com,
www.ibm.com. You can use these commands:
• tracert
• route print
Additionally you should describe each of tracert and route commands providing information about
possible usage and keys.
2. Provide your PC TCP session list and appropriate processes. For this purpose you can use command
netstat –a –b. Describe this command and explain its usage.
Browse any WWW server and repeat netstat –a –b command again. What are differences between
two outputs? Explain differencies.
4. Provide path to sites www.delfi.lt www.viko.lt and www.lrytas.lt from several USA and Europe
addresses. You can use www.traceroute.org portal services.
5. Select any 5 Lithuanian companies and/or organizations and find their IP address ranges
(www.ripe.net )
6. What organizations are responsible for DNS name registration within .lt and .eu zones (resources:
www.allwhois.og and/or www.iana.org)
7. Choose several domain names and check if these domain names are free within .lt zone. You can use
information provided in www.domreg.lt portal. How much this service cost? Check if similar
domains names are free in .org, .eu or .com zones.
8. Explain what is DDNS (Dynamic DNS), when and why it can be used. (www.dyndns.com ,
www.noip.org )
