Networking For Shure

DSP and Audio Interfaces

Course Description
With more and more audio devices communicating through Ethernet-based
IP networks, IT skills have eclipsed a strong back as the primary
requirement for a career in audio. This course will help you understand
what skills are required to work with Shure's Audio Networking Devices and
the MXA Microphones.
At the end of this training you should be able to:

1 List and describe the different types of Shure Audio Networking Devices

2 Identify and select from a list the different Transmission Methods used in audio networking

3 Describe routing multiple channels of digital audio over a network

4 Understand basic troubleshooting techniques for Audio Networks

Course Structure:
Module 1 Audio Networking Interface Overview

Module 2 Audio Networking and Best Practices

Module 3 AES67 and Dante Domain Manager and Device Lock

Module 4 How To Videos Using Designer Software

Module 5 End of Course Summary and Final Exam

Understanding Dante™ Flows
A ‘Flow’ is a Sequence of Packets Sent to an
IP Address
AUDIO NETWORKING Dante™

Flows

• Dante groups audio channels into “flows”

• By default, all flows are unicast

• Each flow supports up to 4 channels

• Maximum # flows varies by chipset

Audio Networking Best Practices
Digital Audio

• Digital Audio Transport

• Convert analog audio to a digital representation
• Multiple channels of audio via a single connection
• Digital Audio Networking
• Allows for easy routing of multiple sources and
destinations
• 1024 bi-directional channels of uncompressed audio over Ethernet
• 24-bit/48 kHz, with Gigabit switch
• Low latency; plug-and-play
• Works on shared networks
Selecting A Network Switch For Audio
Networks
• Managed
• Gigabit
• Power-over-Ethernet
Special Considerations for Dante?

• Gigabit switches
• Managed switches
• Avoid “green” switches (802.3az)
• Shielded cable
• Multiple IP addresses per device
• Dante flows are unicast by default
Switch configuration

• IEEE 802.3az (Energy

Efficient Ethernet)
• Multicast required for
discovery and clock sync
• IGMP Snooping?

AES67

All of Shure’s Audio Networking

Interfaces including the P300 as
well as our MXA Microphones
now support AES67
Ultimo Vs. UltimoX
• AES67 is only supported on UltimoX [UXT] HW
• ANIUSB-MATRIX, ANI22, and all future Shure Ultimo-based products only use UltimoX

• Early MXA310, ANI4IN, and ANI4OUT were produced with Ultimo [ULT] HW.

• All MXA310 produced as of July 2017 use UltimoX [UXT] HW.

• All ANI4IN/OUT produced as of January 2018 use UltimoX [UXT] HW.

• When FW is updated for Ultimo and UltimoX HW. The SUU will know the difference and
put the proper file onto the proper device.

setting it up with a 310 or 910 and go to it’s schematic
page.
• Same for P300 and go through the different tabs for
setting up the P300 including schematic page and
presets
