Physics 3a Msa 2024

The document describes three experiments to be performed: 1) Investigating the period of torsional oscillations of a suspended disc with different masses, 2) Investigating the rate of cooling of water in a calorimeter, and 3) Determining the specific resistance of a wire. Procedures and objectives are provided for each experiment along with sample data collection tables and instructions.

131/3A PHYSICS 3A
(ACTUAL PRACTICAL)

TIME:3:20 Hours DATE: 05 MARCH 2024

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This paper consists of three (3) pages.

2. Answer all questions.
3. Question number one (1) carries 20 marks, and other two (2)
carries 15 marks each.
4. Calculations should be shown clearly.
5. Mathematical tables and non-programmable calculators may be
used.
6. Cellular phones are not allowed in the examination room.
7. Write your examination number on every page of your answer
booklet.
8. The following constants may be used:
Π=3.14 g=9.8m/.

1. The aim of this experiment is to investigate how the period of

torsional oscillations of the suspended disc depends on the mass m
which it carries. You are provided with two cardboard discs. Each
disc has three(3) small holes placed at regular Intervals near the
edge. One of the discs labelled A has pieces of strings threaded
through the holes as disc B.
(a) (i). Clamp disc B horizontally using two small blocks of wood.
Suspend disc A vertically below disc B by using strings
through the holes as shown in figure 1 below.
(ii) Place 50g mass at the center of disc A.
(iii) Adjust the length of the three (3) strings until L=100cm.

(i). Gently rotate disc A through a small angular displacement and

release it so that the disc performs torsional oscillations in a horizontal

plane as shown in figure 2 above.
ii. Mark and record the time taken for 10 oscillations, then find the
period T.

(b) Repeat (b)i. and ii. For different values of m stacking the slotted
masses on top of each other until you have six sets of reading of
T and m. Include the values of Log T and Log m in your table
of results.

(c) T and m are related approximately by a simple power law of the

form T=K
(i)Plot the graph of Log T against Log m and draw the best line
through the points.
(ii). Determine the gradient and the intercept at Log T axis.
(iii). Use your answers of (d)ii. above to calculate the
numerical values of n and K.

(d) ( i). Replace the masses with unknown mass M which has been
provided.
( ii). Then let the disc performs torsional oscillations and find
time for 10 oscillations as before; then find period T and Log T.
( iii). Using the graph plotted; determine unknown mass M.

2. (a) Aim of the experiment.

The aim of this experiment is to investigate the rate of cooling of
calorimeter containing hot water.
(b) Apparatus
You are provided with one calorimeter with it’s accessories, one
thermometer, hot water, and a Source of heat.
(c) Procedures.
i. Measure the room temperature . Heat the beaker containing
the water(200) until it reaches the temperature of 900C .
ii. Pour the hot water into the calorimeter to about full.
iii. Starting with the temperature of 800C,record the temperature
of water at an interval of one(1)minute until temperature is
about 550C.
iv. Record the values as shown below:
Time, t(minutes)
Temperature,𝜃(℃)

v. Plot the graph of 𝜃 against time t.

vi. From v. above choose five (5) points along the curve (,t) and
record the rate of change of temperature corresponding to
each of five points then record as shown in the next figure:

viii. In your words, comment on the graph vii.

3. The aim of this experiment is to determine the specific resistance of
the
wire labelled W, whose Length is 100cm.
(a)i. Set up the meter bridge circuit as shown in figure 4 below in
such a way that one end of the wire is tied onto one terminal of
meter bridge and the other end is free.

ii. By means of a crocodile clip or otherwise, connect length L=15cm

across the right hand gap then balance the bridge. Calculate the
equivalent resistance across the left hand gap of the meter bridge and
record the values of L and .
(b) Increase L in steps of 15cm up to the value of 90cm and in each
value of L, repeat the Procedure in (a)ii. above; then construct a table
showing the values of and L.
(c) Plot the graph of 𝑅𝑒 against L.
(d) Measure and record the diameter of wire W.
(e) From your graph determine specific resistance of the wire W.
(f) State any two sources of errors and precautions to be taken against
them.
