Lavender International "DT Phased Array Training Course Module 0 History of Ultrasonic Phased Array Technology Module 0 rev 2a November 2008 Page 1 of 15avencler taternational NDT Phased Array training Cowse OLYMPUS The Early Years Of Ultrasonics Ultrasonic testing is one of the principle volumetric Inspaction media, The ullrasonic test has bean relied upon for at least the past 50 years and in that time considerable evolution of equipment design has taken place. Yot stil today we are dependant upon tha ‘manual dexterity and the skilled interpretation of UT operators to ‘conduct critical inspections with little more than a simple typed ‘report being generated as an end result. \ So one has to ask, has technology actually improved the and result? Are wa nol able to give more reprosentative images similar {0 the medical industry? What has been the obstacle holding the technology from matching our medical practitioners? Module 0 rev 2a Novernber 2006 Page 2 of 15avender Internaltunal SOT Phased Array Training Course Ultrasonic phased arrays have bean used extensively for macical investigations for the past 30 yoars. Indoad as early as 1959 Tom Brown at Kelvin and Hughes fled for patent of an annular dynamically focussed transducer systom Which latterly became known as a phased array. Early sclentific research in the 1960's was mainly restricted to laboratory work but in the late 60's and early 70's medical physicists became encouraged by the potential of ultrasonic imaging tha human body. PCM aee ec unUnUnU decade, been rather scai ¢ Undoubtedly most of this has been down to lack of computing power needed for italion of the multiple el Industrial application of ultrasonic phased array technology has been, until the past decade, been rather scarce. Undoubtedly most of this has been down to lack of computing power needed for rapid excitation of the multiple element transducers and the nead to process large data files that scans produce. ‘Module 0 rev 2a November 2008 Page 5 of 15Lavender (okarational ND Phased Aeray ‘Training Course {tis only now that equipment can be manufactured relatively inexpensively that applications of ullrasonic phased arrays ara being explored by a wider spectrum of the NDT fraternity, and we ‘expect this to increase rapidly over the next decade. OLYMPU: *“ Olympus Omniscan MX ‘Olympus NDT havo probably the most experience in producing ‘phased array equipment and therefore their product line spans an Impressive range of both portable and fixed installation equipment. ‘The Omniscan MX instrument ids a versatil platform with interchangeable modules facilitating use of phased array, conventional UT and eddy current applications. Designed on the ‘concept of being portable and based on a conventional UT flaw detector menu system the units have many variants in specification and can also be driven as slave modules from the powerful “TomoView' software by connection via Ethemet to a computer. The most common variant for phased array Is the 16/128 module which caters for most of the stereotypical phased array applications. Module 0 rev 2a November 2006 Page 6 of 15Lavender (nternational NDY Phased Array Training Course Margin for a OLYMPUS Olympus Focus Lite: ‘The 'Focus Lite' Instrument was introduced as a mid range trument vith rapid processing speed and more probe and array connection available, This unit requires an external computer to drive the instrument from th 'TomoView’ software platform. More racontly the increased specification options of the ‘Focus Lite’ have ‘moved the more portable unit toward replacing the larger and older ‘Focus’ phased array instrument, Cleat imme facile RD Tech developed the ‘Focus’ instrument as a high performance high specification unit. In the UK this meant that few companies managed to afford phased array technology in the early years and those that did wore notably within the power generation industry. ‘As with the ‘Focus Lite’ the unit raies on connection to a computer via en Ethernot cable to operate fram the ‘TomoView' software. This enables 2 maximum of 32 elements to be excited at any time and can be programmed to multiplex the ‘excited elomants across a maximum of 128 element positions provided a suitably large array is connected. The facia design is Unique in the respect that symbolic representations aro used in preference to words. Adaptors are required to connect pulse acho probes or more then one phased array probe to the unit. Offline Software is available called 'UT studio’, This software allows, analysis and reporting of collected data. The unit more comparable vith the Olympus Focus Lite rather than a smaller instrument, designed moro as a system instrument with multiple channel capabllly. As with most equipment manufacturers tho product range and currently has 6 variants available. These start with @ 16/32 and top out at the 126/256 all supporting 16 pulse echo connections in addition to the PA channels. GE Phasor XS 16/64 GE Inspection Technologias have recently launched their Phasor XS unit into the portable PA instrument market. This instrument is being currently marketed as a budget instrument designed to try ‘and appeal to the flaw detector user. One of the important features ‘currently not available on this instrument is the ability to collect ‘encoded data. Apparently this is fo become a future optional item bbut to date limils the instrument use to simple snap shot imaging only. The instrument is only available in one variant at launch and that is the 16/64 model howver plans are to extend this in time, Module 0 rev 2a November 2008 Page 9 of 15Lavender faternational ID Phased Array raining Course Peak NDT.
