1. INTRODUCTION
We receive isolated reports of water leakage at the piston cooling running pipes on RN68M
engines. The water leakage occurs in the bores of the piston head where the running pipes are
fitted. Piston crowns showing this problem can be repaired by inserting a bush.
Please refer in this context also to the Service Letter RN12/02 dated 10.12.02
2. ORING DESIGN
In 1985 the original ORing (Code No. M34005) diam. 7 x 47 mm was replaced by an ORing
5.33 x 46.99 mm. The crosssection of the original ORing was about 10% larger than the
running pipe groove. Due to this, the ORings were damaged / sheared off during installation,
especially when a new piston crown was used. The 6x50 mm ring is also valid for new piston
crowns.
3. COUNTERMEASURES (RN68M)
Following countermeasures were therefore introduced.
Design calculations show that if the bores (nominal 61.0 mm) for the piston cooling pipes in the
crown are worn due to corrosion / erosion (larger than 61.3 mm) the ORing 5.33 x 46.99 mm is
too small. In this case the bore needs to be reconditioned by means of inserting a bush. The
dimension of the new Oring made out of Viton material will be of diameter 6 x 50 mm. (Today's
standard size). The Oring 6 x 50 mm is valid also for new piston crowns of RN68M engines.
3.1. Design of Bush
The design of the bush as well as its dimensions can be seen on the drawing and in the table
below. Very important is to screw in the bush and secure with LOCTITE 648.
4. REPAIR BUSHES FOR THE ENGINE TYPES RN76/90 AND RN76/90M
The same repair drawing can be used for the above mentioned engine types.
4.1. ORings for the RN76/90 and the RN76/90M Engines
For these engine types three ORings with a diameter of 7mm x 54mm per telescopic pipe are
used.
For RN76/90 (Spare part code No. G 34005)
For RN76/90M (Spare part code No. M 34005)
Note: When ordering Orings always specify the correct engine type
