Narrative Report on Catch-Up Friday

Filipino learners’ literacy is continually deteriorating. This alarming observation was validated as our
country scored the lowest among 79 countries in reading comprehension and 2 nd to the lowest in math and science
from 2018 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) that had been released on 3 rd of December
2019. Going back a year further in 2018, the national mean percentage score on Grade 6 learners was 37.44, the
lowest in NAT history.

Not only that literacy is declining, the morality, health, values and peace of Filipino learners are also
decaying that reflect on their behavior on themselves and towards others. These unpleasant yet truthful reality on
Filipino learners’ literacy, behavior, and self-being are unsurmountable problems to overcome. Despite that, as
Filipinos, we have been known for its tenacity and conscientiousness, we knew that we will do everything in our
capacity to overcome and be victors on this unsurmountable challenge.

As we all knew, the Department of Education (DepEd) remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering
quality, relevant, inclusive, and responsive basic education. The Department’s current initiatives provide
opportunities to enhance learners’ academic performance, particularly the low proficiency levels in reading based
on national and international large-scale assessments. These assessment results necessitate prompt attention to
address learning gaps and strengthen the reading proficiency of every learner. Moreover, there is also a need to
intensify Values, Health, and Peace Education on which recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building.
There is an urgency of need for Filipino learners as global citizens to acquire and strengthen peace competencies
allowing them to become peace builders and advocates in their respective communities, while Health Education
demands stronger advocacy to ensure the overall health and well-being of learners.

In light of these considerations, DepEd implemented the Catch-up Fridays beginning January 12, 2024,
across elementary and secondary schools and community learning centers (CLCs) nationwide. All Fridays of
January 2024 onwards until the scheduled ending of school year.

Upon reading the joint advisory from DepEd Memo no. 001 series of 2024 that had been released last 10 th
of January on above mentioned year. The GFINHS lead by Dr. Mateo V. Valdez with GFINHS’s academic
coordinator, Dr. Eleonor Y. Certeza, conducted a meeting with head and master teachers about the said memo to
talk about plans that best to disseminate and implement the Catch-up Friday.
And so, during the GFINHS In-Service training from January 24 – 30, 2024. Dr. Mateo V. Valdez, had
explained the objectives, goals and importance of implementing Catch-up Fridays. This initiative is designed to
strengthen foundational, social and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of the basic education
curriculum that focuses of the learners’ reading, critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills. Furthermore, it is
so to foster peace, values on learners as well as to care on their health, and mental well-being to shape as future
global Filipino citizens. After the discussion of Catch-Up Fridays and what it entails, the in-service training
focuses on operationalizing the National Reading Program (NRP) Values, Health, and Peace Education on
classroom schedule of the students. The GFINHS teachers listened attentively on discussion on how to deliver the
lessons among students on every catch-up Friday sessions. They asked questions about lesson planning; they
brainstormed and gave suggestions regarding the methods on inculcating peace and values that are congruent on
the suggested topics from the memo and so on.
One of the focal goals of Catch-up Friday is to eradicate problem on literacy by conducting National
Reading program. One of those suggested activities is DEAR or drop everything and read.
Since the GFINHS teachers already have a background information about DEAR (Drop Everything and
Read) as we are already doing it before pandemic happened, it was easy for them to understand what are the steps
on assisting students during DEAR. All GFINHS teachers were participative during the dissemination of
instruction and ready to implement the Catch-Up Fridays for the welfare of Guronasians.
The class schedule assigned to catch-up Friday teachers cascaded down on English teachers for NRP;
Science teachers for Health Education; Math teachers for Values Education and Filipino teachers for Peace
Education.
As each catch-up Fridays progresses and happened, the Guronasians were exposed to different reading
strategies and games to enhance their comprehension, analyzing skill, critical thinking skill, vocabulary, and
more. Health education taught them the importance of taking care and understanding your body and why healthy
foods are essentials on growth. In addition, values and peace education cultivated understanding, compassion,
sympathy empathy, and peace to oneself and others.

Indeed, it was challenging to implement this Catch-up Friday at the beginning but just like a seed that
sprouted and blossomed to beautiful plant with proper nutrients, care and patience from its gardeners, we do
believe at GFINHS that we can also do that to our beloved Guronasians as we believe that they will be globally
competent and literate -- The future hope of our country.
