A Plate of 50 x 40 x 5 mm is subjected to a tensile load of 100 MPa in the presence of initial crack of
length, 2c = 6 mm and depth, a = 2 mm. Determine the stress intensity factor at crack end. Fracture
toughness of the material KIC=500MPa√mm.

reaches half of its thickness. ΔKth=160MPa√mm, KC=500MPa√mm, C=5.21E-13, n=3.

intensity factor and fatigue life when the crack reaches half of plate thickness.

Problem Statement
In a particular application, a crack was identified throughout the thickness of a bracket under fatigue
loading condition. Using smart crack growth tool, determine the critical length of the crack and the
corresponding fatigue life in cycles. KIC=1200MPa√mm, C=5.21E-13, m=3. Consider the initial crack of
1mm. The material considered for the analysis is structural steel.

In a particular application, multiple cracks were initiated due to stress concentration in the edge of a
circular hole. Consider the nearby location along with the hole as a plate of 80 x 40 x 5 mm with a hole
of diameter 15 mm at center which is subjected to a tensile fatigue load of 10 kN, ΔKth=160MPa√mm,
KC=1200MPa√mm, C=5.21E-13, m=3. Consider the initial crack of 2mm. Determine fatigue life to which
the crack reaches its critical length.

Problem Statement
In a joint portion of pipe with an elbow, a surface crack is of 2a = 4 mm and b = 2 mm is found during
inspection. A hot fluid of 120 °C passes through the pipe with a fluctuating internal pressure of 10 MPa.
The air convection coefficient at the outer surface of the pipe is 1e-3 W/mm2°C at room temperature of
28°C. Determine if the joint is safe for operation also estimate the cycles before leak. KC=1200MPa√mm,
C=5.21E-13, n=3.
