column and materials (substances/chemicals used) in the other column

Discussion: written in a paragraph. It explains the theory behind the lab and also explains why certain
steps may have been taken.

Precaution: NOT safety precautions; anything you put in place to ensure the accuracy of the lab and the
results

Reflection: a statement of what you learned from doing the lab. Relate to theory

General rules

 The lab must be written in 3rd person past tense. You DO NOT say I or you. But you can say ‘the
student….’
 Any drawings are done on unlined paper
 You are not allowed to use red ink or any colours other than black or blue
 All drawings are done in pencil.
 All tables, graphs and drawings must have titles written in ALL CAPS and UNDERLINED
 The titles are used for your table of contents, so page numbers must be included

Tables

 Must include a title (all caps and underlined)


 Write the units in the headings (e.g. Time (mins.) Temperature ( °C)
 Use pencil and ruler to draw the table. It MUST be neat

Graphs

 Must be hand drawn not Excel


 Must include a title (all caps, underlined)
 Axes must be labelled with their appropriate units
 Must include the scale/key
 Lines of curves must be neat. Use a sharpened pencil or a mechanical pencil
 Only x or dot with a circle can be used to draw your points. NOT the dot alone
 The graph MUST fill the page

Drawings

o Done on unlined paper


o In labs, the entire drawing, including the title, label lines, labels and/or annotations must be
done in pencil [for assignments and exams, the drawing is pencil, everything else is in pen]
o Clean, clear lines. NOT feathery strokes

o Label lines drawn using a ruler
o All labels on the right side as far as possible
o Labels must be justified (all in line coming down the page)
o Labels in block letters (either common or capital not both) NO cursive writing (joint letters)
o Title at the bottom of the drawing in caps and underlined
o Must include the magnification (the working must be shown) length of drawing/length of the
specimen in cm. One decimal place only
o The magnification is written on the same line as the Title. Example: Mag. X2
o The drawing must fill as much of the page as possible

Skills marked for SBAs

ORR (Observation, Recording, Reporting) this includes proper lab format with correct headings
in the correct order, tables and graphs. Can include the Reflection
AI (Analysis and Interpretation) this is the Discussion, sources of error, limitations, precautions
and conclusion.
MM (Measurement and Manipulation) you are marked on the use of specific apparatus
Dr (Drawing) the drawing is marked for accuracy, correct labels/annotations, neatness and
magnification
P&D (Planning and Design) you design and experiment with appropriate procedures
