Internet Resources & Protocols Grade 8 Notes

WIFI allows devices to connect to wireless networks and communicate wirelessly. URLs uniquely identify web pages and consist of protocols, domains, and optional path/query parameters. IP addresses numerically identify devices on networks. Transfer rate measures data transmission speed while bandwidth determines how much data can be sent at once.

Topic: Internet Resources & Protocols

WIFI: (Wireless Fidelity) is a technology that allows devices to connect to a wireless local area
network (WLAN). It enables devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and smart home
devices to connect to the internet and communicate with each other wirelessly.

URL: (uniform resource locator). The name of the unique address of each page on the World
Wide Web. Every site on the Internet has an address known as a URL. To access a site, you enter
its address (URL) into the web browser. It typically consists of a protocol (such as HTTP or
HTTPS), a domain name (such as Https://Carshow.com), and optional path and query
parameters.

IP Address: An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer

network. Each device has its own unique address to identify it. There are 2 standards for IP
addresses: IP version 4 (IPv4) and IP version 6 (IPv6). The IP address is usually four numbers
separated by full stops: For example, 194.238.196.100. The first two or three numbers identify
the computer network, with the rest identifying the individual computer.

Network Domain: A Network Domain is a group of devices or resources that share the same
network identity. It can be centrally managed with common rules and settings.
Transfer rate: is the speed at which data is transmitted from one device to another over a
network. It is typically measured in bits per second (bps), kilobits per second (kbps), megabits
per second (Mbps), or gigabits per second (Gbps).

Service Providers: These are companies that offer access to the Internet and related services to
individuals and organizations. They can include Internet Service Providers (ISPs), wireless
carriers, cable companies, and telecommunications companies. Example Flow and Digicel.

Internet Access: refers to the ability to connect to and use the internet. It can be achieved
through various technologies, including wired (such as DSL or fiber optic) and wireless (such as
WiFi or mobile broadband) connections.

Bandwidth: The bandwidth determines the amount of data that can be transmitted at a given
time. This is measured in bits per second (bps).

Online Services
Definition: An online service is a service and information provided to users with the help of the
Internet. The services allow the users to communicate with each other by sharing data in various
forms like audio, video, and documents.

Categories of Online Services

 Informational Search: Online services that provide access to information through search
engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo), and websites. These services are used to access
stored data on the Internet. Users can retrieve many forms of data like text, images,
audio, video, etc.

 E-commerce: Online platforms that facilitate buying and selling of goods and services
over the internet. Example Amazon.

 E-Learning: Online platforms and resources that offer educational content and courses.

Examples: Google Classroom, Coursera, Udemy, and discussion boards.

 Communication: Communication services include the sharing of information between
people or among groups of people. Such as email, instant messaging, social media, and
video conferencing.

 Banking: Online banking services allow individuals to manage their finances, transfer
money, pay bills, and access account information remotely.

Protocols

Definition: A set of rules or an agreed way to exchange or transmission of data between devices
so they can communicate with each other.

 Communication Protocols: a set of rules that govern the exchange of data between
devices over a network. Examples: HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), FTP (File
Transfer Protocol), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), and SIP (Session Initiation
Protocol)

 Network Protocols: a set of rules outlining how connected devices communicate across
a network to exchange information easily and safely. Examples: TCP/IP (Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), UDP (User Datagram Protocol), and ICMP (Internet
Control Message Protocol).

 Security Protocols: ensure the integrity and security of data transmitted across network
connections. Example: SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security), IPsec
(Internet Protocol Security), and SSH (Secure Shell)
