Math10WS Q4 Week4-5-Digital

The document provides examples for solving word problems involving measures of position such as quartiles, deciles, and percentiles. It gives the formulas and step-by-step solutions for finding the first quartile, sixth decile, and seventieth percentile of a data set of customer numbers. It also solves for the third quartile, fourth decile, and sixty-fifth percentile using a grouped data table of student grades.

Mathematics 10
Fourth Quarter – Week 4-5

Lesson: Solving Word Problems Involving Measures of Position

MELC: Solves problems involving measures of position (M10SP-IVd-e-1, Week 4-5)

Key Concepts
Quantiles are useful in our everyday lives. In solving real-life word
problems involving measures of position, the following formula can be used.

• Quartile for ungrouped data Quartile for grouped data

𝑘𝑁

𝑘 4 −𝑐𝑓𝑏 )𝑖
𝑄𝑘 = 4 (𝑛 + 1) 𝑄𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 𝑓𝑄𝑘

• Decile for ungrouped data Decile for grouped data

𝑘𝑁
𝑘 −𝑐𝑓
=
𝐷𝑘 10 (𝑛 + 1) 𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + (10𝑓𝐷𝑘 𝑏) 𝑖
• Percentile for ungrouped data Percentile for grouped data
𝑘𝑁
𝑘 −𝑐𝑓

𝑃𝑘 = 100 (𝑛 + 1) 𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 100
𝑓𝑃𝑘 )𝑖
𝑏

Example1

A security guard recorded the number of customers who came into the
establishment wearing a combination of face mask and face shield for each
hour in a day. The results were 15, 11, 13, 8, 12, 5, 6, 10, 15, 10, and 9. Find
the
𝑄1, 𝐷6, and 𝑃70.

Solution:
• First, arrange the data in ascending order.
5,6,8,9,10,10,11,12,13,15,15
1. To solve for 𝑄1, use the quartile formula for ungrouped data
𝑘
𝑄𝑘 = 4 (𝑛 + 1), where k = 1 and n =11.
1
Position of 𝑄1 = 4 (𝑛 + 1)

= (11 + 1)

1
RO_MIMAROPA_WS_Math10_Q4

= (12)
=3
𝑄1 is the 3rd element
𝑄1= 8.

2
RO_MIMAROPA_WS_Math10_Q4

Therefore, 25% of the number of customers who were wearing a

combination of face mask and face shield is less than or equal to 8.

2. To solve for 𝐷6, use the decile formula for ungrouped data
𝑘
𝐷𝑘 = 10 (𝑛 + 1), where k = 6 and n =11.

Position of 𝐷

= 7.2 ≈ 7
𝐷6 is the 7th element
𝐷6 = 11
Therefore, 60% of the number of customers who were wearing a
combination of face mask and face shield is less than or equal to 11.

3. To solve for 𝑃70, use the percentile formula for ungrouped data
𝑘
𝑃𝑘 = 100 (𝑛 + 1), where 𝑘 = 70 and 𝑛 = 11.

Position of 𝑃

= 8.4 ≈ 8
𝑃70 is the 8th element
𝑃70 = 12
Therefore, 70% of the number of customers who were wearing a
combination of face mask and face shield is less than or equal to 12.

Example 2

The following is the table of distribution of grades of 50 students in

Mathematics 10. Calculate the third quartile, 4th decile, and 65th percentile.
Class interval Frequency
90-94 7
85-89 13
80-84 16
75-79 8
70-74 6

3
RO_MIMAROPA_WS_Math10_Q4

4
RO_MIMAROPA_WS_Math10_Q4

Note that the 15th – 42nd grades belong to the class interval of 80-
84. So, the 20th grade is within the same class interval. b. Find the value of
necessary data
LB= 79.5
N= 50
Cfb = 14
fQ3 = 16
i= 5
c. Substitute in the formula for decile of grouped data and solve.
4𝑁 −𝑐𝑓

𝐷4 = 𝐿𝐵 + (10𝑓𝐷4𝑏) 𝑖

𝐷4 = 79.5 + ( )
𝐷4 = 81.38
Therefore, 40% of the students received a grade that is less than or equal
to 81.38

3. To solve for P65;

a. Calculate 𝑃65 class: = = 32.5

This means that we need to find the class interval where the 32.5 th grade
is contained.
Note that the 31st -43rd grades belong to the class interval of 85-89. So the
th
32.5 grade is also within the class interval.

b. Find the value of necessary data

LB= 84.5
N= 50 Cf b = 30
fQ3 = 13 i= 5

c. Substitute in the formula for percentile of grouped data and solve.

65𝑁 −𝑐𝑓

𝑃65 = 𝐿𝐵 + (100𝑓𝑃65 𝑏) 𝑖

𝑃65 = 84.5 + ( )5
𝑃65 = 85.46
Therefore, 65% of the students earned a grade that is less than or equal to
85.46
