Describe How Rocks Turn Into Soil

Rocks break down and weather over time through various mechanical and chemical processes. The main agents that cause weathering are water, wind, temperature changes, plants, animals, and human activity. These break rocks into smaller pieces that become soil.

Describe How Rocks Turn into Soil How Rocks Turn into Soil

Earth is mainly composed of rocks that differ in terms of sizes,

shapes, and colors. Though rocks seem to be very hard, dense, and
indestructible, they still break. The breaking of rocks into fragments
is known as weathering. Weathering is an important process that
helps shape the Earth’s surface. The breaking of rocks results in the
formation of soil and different landforms. This is also the reason why
we have an amazing rock formation.
What is It Weathering can either be mechanical or chemical.
Mechanical weathering is the physical wearing a way of rocks, while
chemical weathering involves changes in the composition of rocks that
allow them break down into pieces.
AGENTS OF WEATHERING
 The different agents of weathering include water, wind,
temperature, plants, animals and human. These agents cause
rocks to break into pieces.
1. Water- Water can break rocks into different ways. The
strong waves hitting the rocks can make it break.
2. As the wind blows, it carries sand or small rock particles that
scratch the rocks’ surface. This can bring about mechanical
weathering which can also result to different rock formation.
3. Temperature- When rocks are exposed to high temperature, they
expand. If rocks are exposed to a low temperature, it contracts.
4. Trees can also cause weathering. Its growing roots can break the
cemented ground in search for more minerals in the soil.
5. Animals- Animals that live underground also contribute to
weathering. As burrowing animals dig deeper, they cause rocks to
break in to pieces, too.
6. Humans- Humans also contribute to the weathering of rocks. The
use of bulldozers and other construction equipment. Some workers
use jackhammers to break boulders of rock as they repair roads.
7. Mining activities that extract stones or rocks from a quarry or an
open pit mine. Some miners throw dynamites and other explosives
on quarry sites to get more rocks or stones. This mining activity can
cause landslides.
