Adjectives are words that add meaning to a noun. In other words, they qualify anoun.
Adjectives are of many kinds. Let us learn about them.
Read these sentences.
1. The wicked wolf killedthe innocent lamb.
2. The house was gloomy.
The coloured words are adjectives which tell us about the quality or the characteristic
possessed by the noun. They answerthe question-What kind?
The adjectives that describe the quality of something are called adjectives of quality.

The adjectives these, this, those, and that point to or indicate a particular noun and tell us
which thing or person we mean. They answer the question-Which one?
Adjectives that indicate a particular noun are called demonstrative adjectives.
We use this and that for singular nouns. We use these and those for
plural nouns. This and these are used to indicate things that are close
by. That and those are used to indicate things that are further away.

The coloured words are adjectives that are used with nouns to show possession.
Adjectives that show possession are called possessive adjectives.
The other possessive adjectives are your, our, her, his and its.

Degrees of Comparison
We use adjectives to show comparison between two or more people, animals or things.
The form of adjective changes when we make these comparisons.
There are three degrees of comparison.
The positive degree of an adjective is used when no comparison is involved.
For example: 1. Nikhil is ayoung man.
2. An elephant is a big animal.
3. Roma is a sensible girl.
The comparative degree of an adjective is used when we compare two people,
animals or things. We add -r/-er to most adjectives to form their comparative
degree. In some cases, we add more before the adjective. We often use than with the
comparative degree.
For example: 1. Nikhil is younger than Sahil.
2. Anelephant is bigger than lion.
3. Roma is more sensible than Arun.
" The superlative degree is used when we compare more than two people, animals or
things. We either add -st/-est to the adjectives or use most before adjectives to form
their superlative degree. It is often used with the article the.
Forexample: 1. Nikhil is the youngest boy in the class.
2. Anelephant is the biggest animal in thejungle.
3. Roma is the most sensible in her family.
Note the different ways of making comparisons.
1. tall taller tallest (add -er or -est)
2. big bigger biggest (double the last letter and add -eror-est)
3. easy easier easiest (remove the -y, add -i and -er or -est)
4. large larger largest (add -ror-st to words endingin-e)

Incorrect Use of Adjectives
Sometimes we use adjectives incorrectly.
For example: 1. Vikram is more better looking than John. (X)
The correct sentence is: Vikram is better looking than John.
2. Mumbai is the most largest city of India. ()
The correct sentence is: Mumbai is the largest city in India.
Never use two comparatives or two superlatives together.
