CHEMICAL HANDLING PROCEDURE

1. Purpose

The purpose of the procedure is to describe VIWO PROJECTS (PTY) LTD process
followed to ensure the safe use of chemicals.

2. Scope

This procedure is applicable to all the organization’s activities, including those performed
on behalf of the organization by an external contractor. This procedure shall also be
applicable in cases where the Client supplies the chemicals to be used.

3. Definitions

3.1 HSC” or “hazardous chemical substance” means any toxic, harmful, corrosive,
irritant or asphyxiant substance, or a mixture of such substances for which –
(a) an occupational exposure limit is prescribed; or

(b) an occupational exposure limit is not prescribed; but which creates a hazard to
health;

NOTE: In this procedure “material/s” or “hazardous material” shall have the same
meaning as described in paragraph 3.1.

4. Responsibilities and Authorities

Management: It is the responsibility of Management to ensure a Risk Assessment is


conducted and communicated to all relevant staff members. Management has the
responsibility to make resources available to ensure the necessary training, PPE,
external contractor services and any other equipment/services needed to perform the
work safely, can be acquired. Management has the authority to provide the necessary
resources to ensure work is performed safely. Management has the responsibility to
ensure all chemicals are stored and handled in accordance with applicable legislation.

Employees: Employees have the responsibility to comply with procedure/s and


instruction to perform the work safely. Employees have the right to refuse work if they
believe it is unsafe.

6. Procedure

6.1 Obtain and review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before ordering and using chemicals.
Ensure that the material can be safely procured, stored, used, and disposed of.

6.2 Know the hazards associated with materials you are using.

6.3 Be prepared for emergencies and know what action to take. Ensure that necessary
supplies and equipment are available for handling small spills.

6.4 Know the location of safety equipment such as emergency shower, eyewash, fire
extinguisher, fire alarm, and emergency telephone numbers.

6.5 Purchase minimum amounts of hazardous materials necessary to accomplish work and
dispense only amounts necessary for immediate use.

6.5 Use hazardous materials only as directed and for their intended purpose.

6.7 Never smell or taste any chemical.


6.8 Avoid direct contact with any chemical, use protective equipment to avoid exposure, and
review SDS for specific recommendations for each chemical used.

6.9 Smoking, drinking and eating are forbidden in areas where hazardous chemicals are in
use.

6.10 Ensure emergency contact information is posted at the place of work.

6.11 Ensure all containers are labelled.

6.12 Label all secondary containers with chemical name and hazard information.

6.13 Ensure ventilation is adequate for the materials you are using.

6.14Electrically ground and bond conductive containers using approved methods before
transferring or dispensing a flammable liquid from a large container.

6.15 Store chemicals in compatible categories.
