The Old Farmer's Almanac

How did people predict the

weather in the past?
A long time ago, in the
1700s, a young scientist
named Robert B. Thomas
studied the sun, the moon
and the stars in relation
to the weather and the
seasons. In 1792, he
produced a small book called
The Farmer's Almanac to
predict the weather for each
year. It told farmers when to
grow different plants and it gave fishermen information about the
sea.
It also included recipes, articles and jokes. Farmers kept the
book in their outhouse (a bathroom that is outside) to read and
use old pages for toilet paper! Today, people continue to buy and use
The Farmer's Almanac to read the weather predictions for each
season and get advice about gardening. In addition to the paper
version, readers can find the book online at almanac.com.

Dear Diary,

It was a difficult journey. I left

home in June. First, I travelled to
a small town to visit the king.
The king sent me on a dangerous
mission with his best knights.
We rode horses through the
mountains. Next, we bought some
food and armour. Then we took
a ship to England. Finally, we
fought in a war. We didn’t fight
for a long time. We won quickly!
Now our country is safe!
