Congratulations! You have given the correct definitions of terms. It
only shows that you have mastered our previous lessons. But how did
you define the terms? How did you write the sentences that defined the
terms? Were the definitions grammatically correct?
Do not worry if they are not, for in this lesson, you will learn how
to write definitions of terms that are grammatically correct.
There are instance that we write definitions wrongly, so, in order to write definitions
correctly, we need to follow the given rules:
Grammar Rules for Writing Definitions
1. Avoid defining with “x” is when and “x” is where statements. Define a
noun with a noun, a verb with a verb.
Examples:
Respondent is a person who gives an answer or a response to a questionnaire.
noun noun
Harassing is attacking someone severely whether physical or verbal means.
verb verb
3. Stick to using active voice because it is difficult for the reader to read a
lot of passive sentences.
Example:
Wrong (use of Passive voice): The preparation of food, cooking, and
presentation of food are the works of a culinary artist.
3
Right (use of Active voice): Culinary artist is a person who works on the
preparation, cooking, and presentation of food.
4. Use proper punctuation. When using commas pay attention whether you
could split sentence. To correct the comma splice, form two sentences.
You can also join the two clauses with a conjunction such as “and”,
“because”, “but”, etc.
Examples:
Mental disorders are conditions that affect your thinking, feeling, mood, and
behavior.
Anxiety is not a joke, because it can ruin lives.
7. Literally, this word means exactly what you say is true, no metaphors or
analysis.
Example:
Wrong (use of metaphor): Custard is the happiness in a bowl.
Right (literal meaning): Custard is the richest ingredient for every recipe.

COVID-19 VACCINE COMBOS AIM TO BOOST IMMUNITY
About a dozen COVID-19 vaccines have been approved around the world, providing
a possible path out of the pandemic. But hurdles have emerged, including logistical issues
around vaccine rollouts, a rising tide of worrisome variants, and uncertainty around the
longevity of immunity. New trials underway to test combinations of different manufacturers’
vaccines seek to overcome some of these challenges.
“It’s really exciting that we have these combination trials,” says Sarah Caddy, a viral
immunologist at the University of Cambridge. “If we can use different vaccines that opens
opportunities for vaccinating more people.” In addition, she notes, “there’s some evidence
that mixing and matching vaccines could give us better immune responses.”
Vaccines induce immunity by training the immune system to recognize a piece of
SARS-CoV-2 called an antigen—usually the spike protein, which the coronavirus uses to
unlock human cells. Most currently authorized COVID-19 vaccines deliver this training via
two shots: the prime and the boost. Moderna’s and Pfizer’s versions, the first to receive
emergency use authorization in the US, use mRNA to deliver the transcript encoding the
virus’s spike protein. Oxford/AstraZeneca’s and Russia’s Sputnik V vaccines, which use
harmless adenoviruses as vectors to deliver the gene for the protein, have also been
approved for use in other countries.
