Benzoic acid + 2 filter paper + petri dish 39.70

Benzoic acid 1.38

DISCUSSION

% recovered of Benzoic acid = 1.38/2.00 x 100%

= 69%

Activated charcoal is used to purify the solution of benzoic acid which contains coloured
impurities. So the impurities can be separated.

From this experiment we know that melting point was also affected by the purity of the
compound. As the compound has higher purity, it will show more nearer to the theoretical
melting point. It means that a pure solid or crystal compound will melt sharply at the
theoretical melting point. An impurities substance will disorders. Melting point decreases as
impurities substance presence since it disrupts the crystal lattice and weakens the
intermolecular force.

During a gravity filtration, a crystal may form at the filter funnel and it will block the filter
funnel. So by adding hot water can avoid the crystal formed at the stem of the funnel. (Since
hot filtration is a type of filtration where the filtration equipment and the sample are heated
during the process.) With hot solution and hot equipment, it can hold more solute.

During (vacuum filtration) rinsed with cold water to increase the rate of crystallization. The
impurities can be left behind while the pure compound is crystallized.

The structural formula of Benzoic acid is C6H5COOH.This molecule consists of a benzene

ring to which a carboxyl functional group is linked.

Benzoic acid(C6H5COOH)
The molecular weight of benzoic acid is 122.12 g/mol. The boiling point of benzoic acid is
around 250℃ and the melting point of benzoic acid is around 130℃.Benzoic acid is soluble
in water.Benzoic acid has a white powder appearance in its solid state. The presence of its
ring, benzoic acid gives a faintly pleasant odor.benzoic acid has many applications. This
compound is used in ointments that prevent fungal skin diseases. Benzoic acid also is used as
a preservative in the food industry. This compound is also used in the manufacture of dyes and
in insect repellants. The precautions that are taken in this experiments are wearing proper lab
coats, goggles and shoes. Other than that, we should also wear gloves when handling the
substance.
