a. Prayer
Please stand and let us feel the presence of the Aaron: In the name of the Father... Thank you,
Lord. Jared, kindly lead the prayer. Lord, for the hundredfold blessings. Help us
divide our God-given skills by multiplying love
and respect. In our hearts, add joys and ideas
and subtract wrongdoings and grudges. Amen.
b. Greetings

Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am!

c. Setting of Standards

Kindly arrange your chairs and pick up the

scattered pieces of papers and other garbage
under your chairs.

Are you done? Yes ma’am.

Please be seated.
c. Checking of Attendance
Who is absent today? None ma’am. / Student A is absent ma’am.
How are you today? Fine, ma’am.
That’s good to hear!
B. LESSON REVIEW

What is our topic last meeting? Ed: Angle of elevation, ma’am.

Very good! Any question about our topic last

meeting?

If none, bring out a ¼ sheet of paper and answer

this.

C. MOTIVATION
1. Move around the room and find a classmate
that is at the exact height as your eyes and write (answers may vary)
the name of your classmate.

2. Go outside the room and make an illustration of

small objects/ structures

Questions: (answers may vary)

 Describe the illustration or picture you have
created from the activity.
What mathematical concepts did you learn from
the activity? When you look down to small objects (answers may vary)
or structures, is there an angle formed?
D. PRESENTATION
When you look down to small subjects or
structures, there is an angle formed. That is what
we call the angle of depression which is our topic
for today.
E. DISCUSSION
The angle of depression refers to the angle
measured down from a horizontal line to the line
of sight. Because the angle is measure
downwards, then the observer is above the object
being observed.

In the figure above, the person riding the Ferris

wheel is looking down at the persons sitting on the
bench. The angle formed by the horizontal line
and the person’s line of sight is an acute angle,
referred to as the angle of depression.

As presented in the previous illustrations, a right

triangle can be formed when the horizontal line
and the line of sight will be connected by a vertical
line. In this regard, the trigonometric ratios can be
used to solve for the measurement of the angles,
or other parts therein.

Going back to our past discussions what are the

trigonometric ratios and its representation?

opposite hypotenuse
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒 = co𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒 =
hypotenuse adjacent
adjacent hypotenuse
cosine = secant =
hypotenuse opposite
Awesome! Moving forward, here are the steps in opposite adjacent
solving math problems involving angle of tangent = tangent =
adjacent opposite
depression.
1. Draw an illustration that visualizes the problem
and label it using the given information.

Will you read the second step, Nico?

Nico: 2. Formulate a ratio of a given measure

Next, the third step? and the variable representing what is being
asked in the problem.

Jayvee: Form an equation using the formulated

Then the fourth step, will you read, Haydee? ratio and the trigonometric function defined by
the ratio.

Haydee: 4. Solve the solution of the equation

Lastly, label your final answer correctly. and the solution of the problem.

Example 1. A bird is looking at a worm on the

ground. If the shortest diagonal distance between
the bird and worm is 25 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 and the horizontal
distance is 18 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠, solve for the angle of
depression.

Let θ be the angle of depression

adjacent side
cos θ =
hypotenuse

Substituting the value of the opposite side and the

adjacent side, what is the answer?
18 m
Shane:
Dividing 18 by 25, what is the quotient? 25 m

Now, since we’re looking for the angle of Lyca: 0.72

depression, 0.72 is not yet the final answer.

On your calculator click shift, then cosine (0.72).

Using your scientific calculator, what is the
answer?
Precious: 43.95˚ ma’am.
Very good! We will only use the shift, when we are
looking for the angle. Understood?

Yes ma’am.
Will you try the next example?
Yes, Euhmar
(a student raised his hand)
Example 2. Jason is on top of a 40-m cliff. He
observes a boat is 80m away from base of the
cliff. Find the angle of depression of the boat. opposite side
Euhmar tan θ =
adjacent side
40 m
What is the angle of depression? tan θ =
80 m
Excellent, Jun! Will you give an ang galing galing tan θ = 0.5
clap to J?
26.57˚ ma’am.
Any question class about the angle of (ang galing galing clap)
depression?

None ma’am.
F. APPLICATION
In the given diagram, Benjamin observes a buoy
in the sea below him from a point above a 45
ft cliff. He has been told that the perpendicular
distance from the buoy to the base of the cliff is 60
ft. What is the angle of depression, in degrees,
from Benjamin to the buoy? Give your solutions to
two decimal places.

opposite side
tan θ =
adjacent side
y
tan 63.4˚ =
37.5
y = 37.5 (tan 63.4˚)
y = 74.89
Therefore, 74.89 ft. is the height of the building.
G. GENERALIZATION
a. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and
FALSE if the statement is incorrect.

1. The angle of depression refers to the acute

angle measured up from the horizontal line to the 1. FALSE
line of sight.
2. Line of sight is an imaginary line that connects
the eye of an observer to the object being 2. TRUE
observed.

b. Based on the given situation, write 😊 if it is an

example of angle of depression and ☹ if not.

3. ☹
3. Sam is playing a basketball and he’s shooting
4. 😊
the ball in a ring. (Integration in Physical
Education)
4. Mary Ann is kneading a bread. (Integration in
Bread and Pastry Production)
5. You’re looking to the flying kite. 5. ☹

6. 😊
6. You’re sweeping the floor.

H. VALUING

What can you see on the picture? A woman looking down/ A woman kneeling
down.
Is it an example of angle of depression?
How or why did you say so? Yes ma’am.

Magnificent! In similar with our topic today,

remember that when life gives you what you
cannot stand... KNEEL.
IV. EVALUATION
You dropped an egg on the kitchen floor. You are 1.5 meters above the floor and 3.75
meters from the egg. To see the egg, what is the angle of depression?

V. ASSIGNMENT (1/2 sheet of paper)

From the top of the control tower 250m tall, an airplane is sighted on the ground below. If
the airplane is 170m from the base of the tower, find the angle of depression of the
airplane from the top of the control tower.
