 When home
is the open road
Ella doesn’t live in a house or flat. Her home is on the road, travelling
around America with her parents and her brother, Scott. Her parents
decided to sell their home and buy a big RV (mobile home), because
they wanted to see different parts of the country and experience a
different way of life. Her dad has his own internet business, so he
works from an office in the RV. We asked Ella what life is like when
your home is always on the move.

My favourite thing is that every day is different! We don’t always travel somewhere
new, but I never know when I wake up what’s going to happen. Life is never boring!
The other great thing is meeting people. When you live in a house or flat, you spend
a lot of time inside. We’re always outside, so we meet some really interesting
people. The most difficult thing is that I can’t be messy. I’ve got my own room in the
RV, but it’s really small, so I can’t leave things lying around – that’s annoying!

A lot of people ask me if I have all the usual arguments with my parents – about
staying up late, doing jobs around the home, that kind of thing. But when you live
together in such a small space it just isn’t possible to argue – it’s too horrible for
everyone! In fact, things are much better now. Because we spend a lot of time
together, I talk to my parents and my brother, Scott, a lot more. We’re more like
friends than family now.

So, what are the most interesting things I've learned this

Unusual gardens in the UK
When we think about public gardens in a city, we
usually think about big parks with trees and grass
where people can sit and chat. Well , the Sky Garden
in London is nothing like that. For a start, it isn't
in the open air. It's on the top three floors of a
skyscraper! The Sky Garden is the highest public
garden in London , with wonderful views across the
city. It cost a lot to build and has many beautiful,
colourful plants. I think it looks pretty amazing!

The second garden I looked at is in Scotland, and it

isn't in a city but in the countryside. It's called The
Garden of Cosmic Speculation! I still have no idea
what the reason is for calling it that, but it 's linked
to science and maths. The designer, Charles Jencks,
creates gardens with mathematical shapes. Unlike
other gardens there aren't many flowers but it's
clever and unusual. Another strange thing about this garden is that
it's only open to visitors for one day every year! This definitely
makes the place special. And, for most of the time, very empty!

Last on my list is a garden in south-west England. This garden

is very popular and has another wonderful name - The Lost
Gardens of Heligan. They were created almost 200 years ago.
Then no one took care of them and no one remembered that
they were there. In 1990, someone saw a door in a wall which led
into the gardens. What a surprise! People restored them and now
they are beautiful again. Some areas are wild, like a jungle, while
others are formal and peaceful. I love the two enormous plant
sculptures: the Giant's Head and the Mud Maid . They look like
people growing out of the ground!

Photography and me
Photography competition winner, Charlie Moon, writes about his hobby.

I'd never been very interested in entering competitions. I didn't think it was important to show that you're better
than everyone else. So, I think I surprised people, especially my parents, when I went in for a national photography
competition for young photographers! The prize money was an attraction - £1,000! However, I'd decided that if I
wanted a future career in photography, I needed to learn to be a bit competitive. I might have a good camera and be able
to take great photographs, but in the future I'd need to beat other photographers for jobs!

It was my friend who told me about the competition. I went onto the website and entered and immediately started to
worry that people might not like my photos. Then, when I saw the other entries I couldn't believe how good they were!
But I won and it taught me a lot.

People often ask me why I started photography in the first place. Lots of my family are into photography. It's my uncle's
job and there are copies of his photographs all over our house! I suppose I got interested when I got a cheap camera for
my birthday when I was five. I learned how to take basic photographs, and that was it. It wasn't a digital camera, so it
cost my parents a lot of money to buy film for it and then get the photographs printed!

Now, of course, it's different. Because of modern technology people don't need to spend a lot on expensive cameras.
Anyone can take good photos with their phone or tablet and they can download software to play around with the
pictures. It's great that it's not just a hobby for a few people any more. But I still think that it's amazing to hold a real
old-fashioned camera in your hands or put it on a stand. I hope that doesn't change. One thing that is important for
me is printing out my best photos. Lots of people store everything online, but printing and hanging up a photograph
makes it very special, and they look great!

Photography is a cool hobby to have for people like me who like art and technology. You can join a photography club.
The one I'm in encourages us to take photos indoors and outdoors. And, I think differently about competitions now -
they can be really good fun!

The big night!

Last Friday was the first night of our school play and on Wednesday I started to get nervous. Everyone was talking about
how excited they were, but I was scared because I was playing the main character. 16........ That Wednesday night I didn't
get much sleep.

We spent Thursday evening getting the stage ready and being busy helped my nerves. The play happens inside an old

house and we had to build walls with windows in them. ........ Everything looked very realistic.

Then it was Friday evening and we put on our costumes and make-up. I was playing an older woman, so we had to

draw lines on my face and spray my hair to make it a bit grey. ........ Suddenly it was 7.30 and the stage curtains opened.
My parents were in the front row!

At first everything went well, and the audience laughed at all the jokes. Then disaster! Ben was supposed to walk up
to the window, but he tripped over a chair and fell against the wall. It started to fall forwards, and everyone stood
completely still. ........ Would the wall crash down on top of us? However, it stopped moving. Everyone breathed again.

The whole audience cheered!

The rest of the play went well and at the end everyone stood up and clapped loudly. Someone gave me some flowers and
I saw my parents smiling. ........ The review on the school website said, 'The actors were brilliant, and they didn't let a

minor problem affect them.' I'm still not sure that I'd like to repeat the experience!
