College of Design and Social Context


The College of Design and Social Context encompasses RMIT University’s renowned art, architecture,
design, built environment, communication, and social science disciplines. The college has 24,500 students
and over 1,000 staff located in eight schools. It teaches programs in architecture, art, design, education,
fashion, media and communication, property management and social studies. Its schools are located
across three Melbourne campuses and offer programs locally and internationally.

The College’s academic programs are generally market leaders and in high demand. Based on a strong

School of Design
The School of Design consolidates RMIT’s design fields of Communication Design, Industrial Design and
Digital Design (animation, games and interactive Design). While maintaining a focus on these disciplines,
it embraces innovative approaches to interdisciplinary work. The School works closely with industry, the
cultural sector and communities, including research collaborations, internships and partnered studios.
Its industry partners include: ACMI, the National Gallery of Victoria, ANZ Bank, Australia Post, The Olivia
Newton John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre, Austin Hospital, Lend Lease, Deloitte Digital,
Aurecon, The Melbourne Zoo, to name a few. The School is global facing and engaged in what it does. It
delivers programs in Singapore and Vietnam and has a community of PhD researchers based in RMIT
Europe and Asia.

Position Summary
The Games Program at RMIT is well known for its ties to the local independent Games industry and for
producing Games with cultural impact in Australia and further field. RMIT Games also runs this program
at RMIT Vietnam. In this new role, the Lecturer should seek to expand and complement this existing
expertise with new relationships and technological foci, as well as building ties with RMIT Games
Vietnam. This specifically includes building educational content for growth areas and game engines such
as; Unreal Engine, Godot, AI-driven tools and Game-specific 3D modelling and animation. Additional
complementary capacity building could involve extended reality, motion capture, photogrammetry/spatial
scanning or location-based game design. The lecturer should be self-driven to build this capacity and
create impactful ties to industry to support viable student careers, with a passion and aim to help
students develop high-quality portfolios with advanced formal design and visioning skills.

The Lecturer is expected to contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the School, in disciplines
related to their field of expertise. More specifically, the Lecturer is responsible for carrying out teaching
activities within undergraduate, Masters and Graduate Diploma programs and for maintaining and
advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities. The Lecturer is also expected to
actively promote the program by establishing and maintaining memberships, links and partnerships with
academic, industry and professional communities. The Lecturer is expected to work collaboratively and
collegially with fellow academics within the teaching team, and update colleagues and students on
developments in their subject area or specialisation. The Lecturer may be responsible for course
coordination.

Reports to: Associate Dean, Digital Design
In relation to any course coordination, the Lecturer is responsible to the relevant Program Manager.

Key Accountabilities
• Undertake independent teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level including:
designing, conducting and moderating assessment; implementing improvements informed by
course evaluation activities and student feedback.
• Undertake independent professional activities, scholarship and/or conduct high quality research
activities appropriate to the profession or discipline including: managing individual projects within
timelines and budgets and ensuring compliance with quality and reporting requirements;
publishing research results in high quality outlets as lead or co-author; preparing and submitting
external research funding applications; and supervising higher degree by research candidates.
• Undertake administration duties, which may include course coordination role or management of a
small award program.

Key Selection Criteria
1. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels,
including online delivery, and the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials.
2. Ability to undertake course coordination role.
3. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with and to negotiate sensitively with students especially
on issues related to effective learning.
4. Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs which will contribute to existing
Discipline and School research areas evidenced by publications, development of new research
initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.
5. Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
6. Ability to build effective networks with colleagues and generate alternative funding projects through
effective liaison with industry and government.
7. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by
research candidates, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and
multidisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications
Mandatory: PhD or equivalent 1 in relevant field.

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children Check and other checks
as required by the specific role. Maintaining a valid Working With Children Check is a condition of
employment at RMIT.

Preferred: Completion of the Essentials of Learning and Teaching (login required) or possess (or eligible
to apply for) appropriate HEA fellowship (if the appointed candidate does not meet this requirement at time
of appointment, they will be supported to complete this as a requirement to fulfil their probation).
