Teacher: Mrs. Mary Grace A. Castellon

LEARNING CONTENT: Communication Apprehension

LEARNING MATERIAL/S: DIWA SENIOR HIGHSCHOOL SERIES, Power point presentation

LEARNING TARGET
1.1. Differentiate stage fright from communication apprehension (CA).
1.2. Name the four different communication situations affected by CA and cite examples for each.

LEARNING CONCEPT
I. Communication Apprehension - is the broad term that refers to an individual's “fear
or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons.”

DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION

1. TRAIT ANXIETY - is considered a personality type, which represents that the individual has an
orientation to feel anxiety during the communication act regardless of the situation, audience or
context
2. CONTEXT ANXIETY - triggers communication apprehension due to a specific context. This is
considered a psychological response caused by a specific context but not necessarily on others;
a person can have no problem talking to her best friend but can get anxiety while talking in front
of a class.
3. AUDIENCE ANXIETY - is when a specific individual or group of people creates a problem on
communication, or a reverse reaction. For some people, anxiety can be caused by familiar
peers, while for others it can be caused by unfamiliar faces.
4. SITUATION ANXIETY - is a psychological reaction of a person due to a specific situation that
may not have any relation with the person or context.

II. Common Communication Situations

There are five communication situations you might see yourself in: a conversation, a dialogue, an
interview, a small group discussion, and public speaking.

 Conversation – a face to face interaction between or among individuals. It is formal in

nature, with no agenda or set purpose.

 Dialogue – it is similar to a conversation, much more intimate and purposive than the latter.

 Interview – it is a formal, purposive consultation. The interviewer’s objective is to obtain

specific pieces of information from the interviewee.
 Small group discussion – is a gathering of three or more people who aim to explore a
subject matter/issue or arrive at a decision.

 Public Speaking – speaks in front of an audience. The speaker’s aim is to convey

information, persuade, or entertain, among others.

STAGE FRIGHT- The fear of speaking before an audience is commonly referred to as stage fright.
