I love this post and the simplicity (uncluttered!) of the classroom photos. Though I'm blessed with a
large room, I've little storage, and as such there are boxes and materials on top of cupboards.
Through play, children develop a strong foundation for learning in all areas, including language and

this might be a little tricky but the kids did SUCH a good job with it. I put a party hat, tennis ball,

timer longer each time so that the equations get harder. Learning stories are a form of documentation
that educators use to tell a story that demonstrates learning. I have to say I am loving math this year
and this has been one of the funnest units to teach yet. We used to use stop signs to let children
know which bins they could use since we had not created proper storage for our materials. On the
second day we go over the learning goal and success criteria. Another big hit was the marshmallow
and toothpick 3D figure building centre. It is still a very structured environment with routines and
expectations. I prepare a bag of items and have the students sort them into hoola hoops. Some are
students drawing and writing about the 2D shapes and number of faces they see on 3D figures. We
will invite you for nature walks, community trips and other outdoor education opportunities as much
as possible. You will see the children make more deliberate and thoughtful choices in the tools that
they need.

to teach yet. On the fourth day we start talking about addition strategies. I was thinking that after the
sorting unit, I might put the descriptors and the provocations into a tub, so students can pull them out
throughout the year and compare their learning. I have to say I am loving math this year and this has

tell them that addition is like composing numbers, we just use different symbols. After the lesson I
transferred them onto canvas to display as part of our sorting resource wall. You will see the children
make more deliberate and thoughtful choices in the tools that they need. However I find that not all
students will naturally sort or need more guidance than an open-ended provocation. The photos are
lovely and inviting, but it is your words that I come back to again and again. Then we write the
