Preposition of Time:

1. On
Used to specify days and dates:

 The music teacher comes on Wednesday.


 We are having a party on the fourth of July.

2. At
Used to point out specific time:

 I will meet you at 12 p.m.


 The bus will leave at 2:30 p.m.

3. In
Used for non-specified times during a day, month, season, year:

 She always reads newspapers in the morning.


 He started working in 1983.

4. For
Used to show the length of time:

 I’ve been going to the gym for six months.


 They made us wait for 30 minutes.

5. Since
Used with a specific date or time:

 Beena has been in Scotland since 1990.


 We’ve been here since 3:30 p.m.

6. After
Used to talk about something which will take place later in time:

 I will call you after I get home from work.


 I will leave for school after an hour.

7. By
Used for a specific event that will happen before a certain time in the future:

 Please send me the information by Monday.


 I will reach the station by 4 p.m.

8. Until
Used for an event that will continue and then stop at a certain time:
 He is staying in London until the 30th.
 Her mother was worried until she got home.

9. During
Used to show that something happens in the time of some other thing:

 She cried during the movie.


 I was very tensed during my board exam.

Preposition of Place:

1. At
Tells us that the following noun is located at a specific point or location. It shows an exact
position.

 She is waiting at the entrance.


 He is sitting on his chair at his desk.

2. In
Tells us the noun is in an enclosed space. Basically, when something is inside something else.

 Put these chocolates in a box.


 There are fifty students in a class.

3. On
Tells us that the following noun is located on a surface. Use on when one thing is attached to or
is touching something else.

 The cat is sitting on the table.


 He fell down on the floor.

4. To and Towards

 To often shows the result of the movement and is more specific.

Example: I am going to the market.

 Towards shows the general direction of the movement.

Example: I am going towards the market (I may turn left/right before the market).

5. Beside/Besides
The word beside means close to or next to.

 Come and sit beside me.


Besides means in addition to or apart from.

 Besides Neeta, who else went to Nepal?

6. In /Into
In shows, a position of rest while into shows motion of something towards the other thing.

 The water is in the glass.


 The child jumped into the swimming pool

7. Above /Over
The above is used to denote space between two things.

 The birds flew above the trees.

Over is used to show that one thing is very close to another.

 He put the carpet over the broken tile.
