System Password Not Working

PURPOSE

This article describes how to resolve the issue where the Data Domain system password is not working, or has been forgotten.

Symptoms:

New install and default password does not work

Known correct password does not work

APPLIES TO

All Data Domain systems

All Software Releases

CAUSE

There is a lockout that occurs after three failed attempts to login. The lockout period is two minutes but will reset after each failed
attempt after the initial lockout. Older Data Domain systems used “abc123” as the default password. On newer systems the default
password is the system serial number. Because the default password changed, it is common for the incorrect password to be
entered as installers are used to the older default password. Another common cause of lockout is that passwords are case sensitive
and can be entered incorrectly.

SOLUTION

NOTE: If the login issues are intermittent, please check if there are scripts running that are attempting to login to the Data Domain
System as well.

If the correct password is known:

1. Ensure that the password is correct. If the lockout occurs during a new install, verify the default password in the Install/Setup
Guide.

2. Wait at least two minutes, then enter the correct password. Passwords are case sensitive.

NOTE: Rebooting the system will also clear the lockout.

If the correct password has been forgotten:

1. Try using the factory defaultsysadminpassword as it might not have been changed. On newer systems the default
password is the system serial number in upper-case. Please note that 0F12345678 is not the same as 0f12345678;
Passwords are case-sensitive.

2. If the default password does not work, search the daily autosupport under the "REGISTRY" section for other users. Any user
with admin rights can login and create another user or reset the forgotten password. In the example below, three users have
admin rights.

========== REGISTRY ==========

...
config.user.accounts.kevin = admin
...
config.user.accounts.dsmith = user
...
config.user.accounts.labadmin = admin
...
config.user.accounts.sysadmin = admin
Note: The user information is not available in the"REGISTRY"section of an autosupport for systems running DD OS 5.2.x or
later.

3. If there are no other users with admin rights and none of the other solutions work, contact your service provider to have the
password reset.

After a USB installation:

For USB installations the password is set to "abc123".

NOTE: After a fresh USB install, the default password may not be accepted for several minutes after first appearance of the
login window to due system configuration activities. Wait 5 minutes after the login window first appears before attempting to
login after a fresh install. This is not required for subsequent logins.
