Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
One of the most important factors in a child's
development is their parents. This is a result of the
power and ability they possess to mold and raise their
kids into lenient, inspired, and motivated individuals.
Individuals who consciously participate in learning
activities On the other hand, parents without
participation in their children's educational process is
only seen as demotivating and demoralizing. Due to
carelessness of the parents their kids accomplishments
have a negative impact on their achievement.
Abdul-Adil and Farmer (2006) claimed that parental
involvement included parental attitudes actions, fashion,
and events that take place inside or outside of the
classroom to support students' academic performance or
behavioral success in the school where they are presently
enrolled. Active parental participation in their kids'
education has a positive and notable impact on the lives
of children, including their growth, actions,

The students who regularly attend school, behave
better, and perform better academically starting in
kindergarten. Continue your education through high
school and enroll in better institutions. Involvement of
parents makes clear messages to their kids, showing them
that they're interested in what they're doing, and
supporting the notion that school is crucial. Getting
actively involved at home and at school with their
children's education. Parents demonstrate their interest
in their children's activities and send positive messages
to them at school. Enhancing the notion that education is
important. Parents' financial stability and positive
aspirations appear to be key factors in their children's
success. Education, concern over the influence of parents
is a major concern among educational researchers. This
project aims to highlight the influence of parental
association on student’s academic achievement .

According to Leila l. Pinatel et.al the study aims
to investigate the relationship between parental
involvement and academic performance among education
students at a state university in the Philippines.
According to the findings of the study, students perceive
their parents to be relatively involved in their
education. Similarly, education students enrolled in
state universities are excelling academically.
Furthermore, the study discovered a significant
relationship between the level of parental involvement
and the student’s academic performance. As a result, the
more involved parents are in their children’s school
lives, the better their academic performance. It is
suggested that school officials develop programs and
activities to increase parental involvement in their
children’s school lives.
The purpose of this study is to determine the
relationship between parental involvement and student’s
academic achievement,to find out the challenges of the
student’s who doesn’t have parents that involves
themselves in the academic life of their children.

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature
The impact of parent involvement with their
children's educational outcomes can have a profound
effect on learning, achievement, motivation, engagement,
values, and goals. This literature review is the first to
focus on parental involvement and educational outcomes in
the student’s academic achievement.
Parent involvement in a Student early education is
consistently found to be positively associated with a
child's academic performance (Hara & Burke, 1998; Hill &
Craft, 2003; Marcon, 1999; Stevenson & Baker, 1987).
Specifically, Students whose parents are more involved in
their education have higher levels of academic
performance than children whose parents are involved to a
lesser degree. The influence of parent involvement on
academic success has not only been noted among
researchers, but also among policy makers who have
integrated efforts aimed at increasing parent involvement
into broader educational policy initiatives. Coupled with
these findings of the importance of early academic
success, a Student’s academic success has been found to
be relatively stable after early elementary school

(Entwisle & Hayduk, 1988; Pedersen, Faucher, & Eaton,
1978). Therefore, it is important to examine factors that
contribute to early academic success and that are
amenable to change.
Parental involvement and teachers' evaluations of
the Student’s academic performance in the classroom were
fully mediated by the nature of the student teacher
relationship. Limitations, future research directions,
and public policy implications were discussed.Academic
performance of a Student is consistently found to be
positively correlated with parental involvement in their
early education (Hara & Burke, 1998; Hill & Craft, 2003;
Marcon, 1999; Stevenson & Baker, 1987). Particularly,
Students with parents who are more involved in their
education perform better academically than Students with
parents who are less involved. The impact of parental
involvement on academic success has been noted not only
by researchers, but also by policymakers who have
incorporated efforts to increase parental involvement
into broader educational policy initiatives. Based on
previous research, it was hypothesized that parents who
have a positive attitude towards Student’s education,
school, and teacher are able to positively influence
their child's academic performance by two mechanisms: (a)
by being engaged with the child to increase the child's
self-perception of cognitive competence and (b) by being
engaged with the teacher and school to promote a stronger
and more positive student-teacher relationship.

Standardized achievement test results, teacher
evaluations of academic performance, and report card
grades are just a few of the techniques used to gauge a
child's academic performance. The reading, math, and
writing skills that children acquire through direct
instruction are all evaluated using standardized
achievement tests, which are impartial tools (Sattler,
2001). In addition to allowing for ratings on a wider
range of academic tasks than those covered on
standardized achievement tests, teacher rating scales
enable teachers to evaluate the accuracy of the student's
academic work in comparison to that of other students in
the class (DuPaul & Rapport, 1991). Few studies for early
elementary school students use report card grades
because, among other things, there is no standardized
testing for these students. Few studies use report card
grades for early elementary school students due to, among
other things, a lack of a standardized grading system and
uniform subject areas children are evaluated on. Report
card grades allow teachers to report on classroom
academic performance.
Gonzalez-DeHass et al. (2005) argued that when
parents are involved in their children’s schools,
academic motivation and achievement increase. Students’
interest in learning, competence, and understanding of a
subject area, improves and promotes student achievement.
Haas and Reiley (2008) examined ways to increase homework
completion among middle school students using selected
interventions. One intervention required students to

complete daily homework planners and parents to sign the
planners for verification. Students who were consistent
with the study requirements received a Gotcha slip from
school staff as positive recognition. The findings
indicated that most parents cooperated. Despite a few
nonparticipants, the homework planners, in conjunction
with a Gotcha slip, created a dialog between teachers and
students as well as between teachers and parents. Haas
and Reiley also found that not all students knew how to
fill out the homework planners accurately, and the
increased communication with parents served to improve
these students’ organizational skills and increase
homework completion rates.
Since early times, parents have been the most
important educators of their children. Children received
their first education in the home until 1580 B.c. when in
Egypt the first formal education outside the home was
started. The root of the current emphasis on parental
involvement, however, can be seen in the works of
Rousseau (1712-1778) and Pestalozzi (1747-1827). Rousseau
emphasized education' and the importance of mothers being
involved in the education of their children. Pestalozzi
viewed a mother as the child's first educator. His
thoughts were that the mother is the first to nourish her
child's body; so she should also be the first to nourish
his or her mind (Pestalozzi, 1951). In the United States,
the kindergarten movement began in the 1880s with its
emphasis on involving parents in their children's
education. As a result, in the late 1880s , national

parent educational organizations were established, and by
the 1920s and 1930s there were m.ore than 75 such
organizations. Gestwicki (1992) reported that during the
1930s parent cooperative nursery schools began and
continue today involving middle-class parents with
opportunities to participate in the life of the schools.
These efforts may include helping to define school
philosophy and practices to aiding in the care and
maintenance of facilities.
Parent involvement in a child's education is
consistently found to be positively associated with a
child's academic performance. However, there has been
little investigation of the mechanisms that explain this
association. The present study examines two potential
mechanisms of this association: the child's perception of
cognitive competence and the quality of the student-
teacher relationship. This study used a sample of 158
seven-year old participants, their mothers, and their
teachers. Results indicated a statistically significant
association between parent involvement and a child's
academic performance, over and above the impact of the
child's intelligence. A multiple mediation model
indicated that the child's perception of cognitive
competence fully mediated the relation between parent
involvement and the child's performance on a standardized
achievement test. The quality of the student-teacher
relationship fully mediated the relation between parent
involvement and teacher ratings of the child's classroom
academic performance. Limitations, future research

Parent involvement in a child's early education is
consistently found to be positively associated with a
child's academic performance (Hara & Burke, 1998; Hill &
Craft, 2003; Marcon, 1999; Stevenson & Baker, 1987).

Therefore, it is important to examine factors that

amenable to change.
Researchers have reported that parent-child interactions,
specifically stimulating and responsive parenting
practices, are important influences on a child's academic
development (Christian, Morrison, & Bryant, 1998;
Committee on Early Childhood Pedagogy, 2000). By
examining specific parenting practices that are amenable
to change, such as parent involvement, and the mechanisms

by which these practices influence academic performance,
programs may be developed to increase a child's academic
performance. While parent involvement has been found to
be related to increased academic performance, the
specific mechanisms through which parent involvement
exerts its influence on a child's academic performance
are not yet fully understood (Hill & Craft, 2003).
Understanding these mechanisms would inform further
research and policy initiatives and may lead to the
development of more effective intervention programs
designed to increase children's academic performance.
Parent involvement has been defined and measured in
multiple ways, including activities that parents engage
in at home and at school and positive attitudes parents
have towards their child's education, school, and teacher
(Epstein, 1996; Grolnick & Slowiaczek, 1994; Kohl,
Lengua, & McMahon, 2000). The distinction between the
activities parents partake in and the attitude parents
have towards education was highlighted by several recent
studies. Several studies found that increased frequency
of activities was associated with higher levels of child
misbehavior in the classroom (Izzo, Weissberg, Kasprow, &
Fendrich, 1999), whereas positive attitudes towards
education and school were associated with the child's
increased academic performance (Rimm-Kaufman, Pianta,
Cox, & Bradley, 2003). Specifically, Izzo et al. (1999)
reported that an increase in the parent's school
activities, such as increased number of parent-teacher
contacts, was associated with worsening achievement, as

increased contacts may have occurred to help the teacher
manage the child's existing behavior problems. The
significance of parent attitudes toward education and
school is less well understood, although attitudes are
believed to comprise a key dimension of the relationship
between parents and school (Eccles & Harold, 1996).
Xitao Fan & Michael ChenXitao(2001) Parental
participation has been viewed by society in general and
educators in particular as a key component of the
solution to many issues in education because the notion
that it has a beneficial impact on students' academic
progress is so intuitively attractive. However, a
significant percentage of this field's literature is
qualitative and non-empirical. There seem to be a lot of
discrepancies among the empirical research that have
quantitatively studied the problem. To summarize the
quantitative literature on the connection between
parental participation and students' academic
achievement, a meta-analysis was done. The results show
that parental participation and academic achievement have
a minor to moderate but practically significant link.
Through moderator analysis, it was discovered that
parental aspiration/expectation for children's education
accomplishment has the strongest link, but parental home
supervision has the least relationship, with students'
academic achievement. Additionally, the correlation is
higher when a global indicator, such as GPA, rather than
a subject-specific indicator, is used to measure academic
accomplishment (e.g., math grade). The study's

limitations are mentioned, and recommendations are given
for future research.
According to the study of an international scale,
parental involvement in school has long been heralded as
an important and positive variable on children’s academic
and socioemotional development. From an ecological
framework, reciprocal positive interactions between these
two key socializing spheres – families and schools –
contribute positively to a child’s socioemotional and
cognitive development (Bronfenbrenner, 1987). Empirical
findings have demonstrated a positive association between
parental involvement in education and academic
achievement.According to Pérez Sánchez et al., 2013;
Tárraga et al., 2017 improving children’s self-esteem
and their academic performance (Garbacz et al., 2017) as
well as school retention and attendance (Ross, 2016).
Family involvement has also been found to be associated
with positive school attachment on the part of children
(Alcalay et al., 2005) as well as positive school
climates (Cowan et al., 2012). Research has also
evidenced that programs focused on increasing parental
involvement in education have positive impacts on
children, families, and school communities (Jeynes, 2012;
Catalano and Catalano, 2014). Parent-school partnership
allows for the conceptualization of roles and
relationships and the impact on the development of
children in a broader way (Christenson and Reschly,
2010). From this approach, families and schools are the
main actors in the construction of their roles and forms

of involvement, generating new and varied actions to
relate to each other according to the specific
educational context. The main findings in the family-
school field show a positive influence of this
partnership, contributing to academic achievement and
performance, among other positive consequences (Epstein
and Sander, 2000; Hotz and Pantano, 2015; Sebastian et
al., 2017).
There is also strong support from international
research showing the positive influence of parental
involvement over academic achievement, as has been
demonstrated in a variety of meta-analyses across
different populations and educational levels (Castro et
al., 2015; Jeynes, 2016; Ma et al., 2016). Moreover,
although there is a wide range of parental involvement
definitions, some more general and others more specifics,
there is a consensus among research results about the
positive influence of parental involvement over child
academic achievement.
According to the study of parental involvement in
education hail from anglophone countries and are based on
cross-sectional and correlational designs (Garbacz et
al., 2017) while in Latin America research remains
scarce. In a recent systematic review of the literature
on parental involvement in education in Latin America,
only one Mexican study from 1998 was found which was also
heavily influenced by interventions from the United
States (Roth Eichin and Volante Beach, 2018). Chile has

acknowledged the importance of collaborative
relationships between families and schools developing a
National Policy for Fathers, Mothers and Legal Guardians
Participation in the Educational System (Política de
Participación de Padres, Madres y Apoderados/as en el
Sistema Educativo) in 2002 which was recently updated in
2017 (Ministerio de Educación, Gobierno de Chile, 2017).
Since the publication of this policy various local
initiatives have sprouted in the country seeking to
strengthen school family relations (Saracostti-
Schwartzman, 2013). Nevertheless, the majority of
research in the country has thus far been of a
qualitative nature with a focus on describing relations
between family members and their schools, and identifying
tensions between these two spheres (Gubbins, 2011).
Thus, this study seeks to advance the analysis of
the effects of parental involvement in school on the
academic achievement of Chilean students. The study aims
to analyse how different parental involvement profiles
(based on the main forms of parental involvement
identified in literature) influence children’s academic
achieved. Parental involvement can take a wide variety of
forms, among them, communication between family and
school, supporting learning activities at home and
involvement in school activities have been highlighted
(Schueler et al., 2017), these are included in this study
using the scales proposed by Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler
(2005).

as providing opportunities for parents to attend parent-
teacher conferences, sending regular progress reports to
parents, involving them in decisions related to their
child's education, and providing resources and support
for parents to help them stay informed and involved. It
is also recommended that schools and educators work to
create a welcoming and inclusive environment that
encourages parents to be involved in their child's
