TITLE: Cagayan De Oro City Library and Historical Museum

PLATE No. 2
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 08
TIMELINE:
Launching Date: March 20, 2024
Submission Date: April 19, 2024 8:00PM
Mode of Presentation: Manual or Digital output

Background of the Project:

Cagayan de Oro City is situated strategically at the Northern tip of Mindanao Island, it is
comprised of municipalities that are economically flourishing. Cagayan de Oro city is a merging
sector for people, goods and farm produce and is the center for arts, culture and respectable
education. The present situation of the city library is very dismal. The existing city library is very
limited, decrepit and outdated in terms of facilities, services and information material collections.
As for the city museum, which is presently situated at the old water tower built in 1922 near the
Gaston park area, is too small and quaint to house all the artifacts and exhibits of the city.

The fast growing city imperatively needs a functional repository of printed and recorded cultural,
intellectual, literary, knowledge and other information materials and a museum that connects us
with the CDO’s historical past. For an emerging city to grow positively the governance must not
overlook education and cultural growth. Public libraries and museums actually help support these
goals.

The library holds about 100,000 book collections and bound periodicals. The said public central
library should enable all users from all ages to enjoy comfortably while doing research, casual
reading, browsing and other activities. The direction is to design a library for the future, “an
intelligent library” for the modern digital age, the library may use RFID technology to provide
convenience and easy management for library operations. Furthermore the library must be
equally responsive to the environment with a relax-like ambiance while still maintaining the
“library” image.

The appreciation of one’s culture and heritage is essential. There is a need to try to understand
our history through artifacts because they contain stories about who Cagayanons really are. The
museo houses the ethnological, archeological and historical artifacts of Cagayan de Oro. The
CDO museo should house numerous vestiges of prehistoric life dug from the Huluga Cave and
other archaeological sites in Mindanao, relics collected during the Spanish, Japanese and
American colonial periods, and the history of Cagayan de Oro City.
