CH ENGR 102B: Thermodynamics II

Spring 2024

Version date: April 1, 2024

This syllabus is the primary source of information about the organization and administration of
CH ENGR 102B for the Spring 2024 quarter. The schedules and policies written in this syllabus
are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. Any changes will be announced via email
and posted on the course website. Revision dates will be noted at the top of the syllabus. The
most current revision supersedes any earlier drafts.

Attendance: I expect everyone to attend all lectures and discussions and to be on time. The
aim of the lectures is to guide you in your studies and to clarify, emphasize, and
illustrate the important concepts and their applications. Also, topics not covered
in the text might be covered in the lectures, and important announcements may
be made during lectures.
Every week one graded test of 20 minutes will be performed during one
lecture.
Exams: There will be one mid-term exam and a final exam. The midterm exam will be
given during class on Thursday, May 2, 2 PM – 3:50 PM. The final exam is

Objectives: Understand the fundamentals of classical and statistical thermodynamics in

chemical and biomolecular engineering sciences. The following topics will be
coved: Phase equilibria in single and multicomponent systems, thermodynamics
of ideal and non-ideal solutions, chemical reaction equilibria, introduction tp
statistical ensembles and partition functions.

Textbook: An Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics 7th or 8th Edition,

J. M. Smith, H. C. Van Ness, and M. M. Abbott, McGraw-Hill, 2005
Location: SEL/8270 Boelter Hall—Permanent Reserves
Call Number: TP155.2.T45 S58 2005

Grading: The grades for the course will be based on weekly tests, the exams and the
project. No extra credit will be offered. These four areas will be weighted such
that their respective contributions to the overall grade are

Weekly tests based on homeworks—20%

Project—20%
Mid term Exam—30%
Final Exam—30%

Each test and exam will be graded on a scale of 20 points, then, the scores of
each assignment will be weighted to reflect its contribution to the overall grade
(listed above). Letter grades will be assigned based on performance relative to
the class average score.

Homework and weekly test: There will be one homework assignment per week, except during
exam weeks, and except for the starting week on the project. Homeworks will
NOT be collected and graded. However, every week one exercise taken from the
homework of the previous week will be given as a written online test (closed
book, no notes). Homework is meant to extend and apply the concepts of the
class. It is recommended that you first attempt the problems by yourself, getting
help in a second step if you have difficulties.

Project:
A project using the concepts of the class and requiring programming with
MatLab will be organized after the Mid-term. The first week of the project, the
discussion sessions will be dedicated in helping you with technical aspects. The
project will be individual. The project solution and the Matlab code will be
graded.

Academic Integrity:
I expect everyone to conduct themselves ethically in all aspects of this course. In
particular, do not copy any answers to any homework or exams from any other
individual, especially classmates and older grad students. HSSEAS policy
requires that any suspicion of academic misconduct be referred to the Office of
the Dean of Students. Please see the Student Guide to Academic Integrity
available at the website for the Office of the Dean of Students
(http://www.deanofstudents.ucla.edu/Academic-Integrity/integrity).
