Aim & objectives

1. To investigate which set of birds grow faster, those feed with hipro-mix ration or those feed
with Nutra- mix feed ration.
2.To determine the set of birds that yields the greater output.
3. To determine which set of birds has the greater income.
4. To determine which set of birds have the more efficient F.C.R.
Problem statement
Poultry farmers are spending more money on feed ascribable to the fact of them not knowing
which feed provides a better growth rate, as a solution this investigation was carried out to
determine which broiler feed produces a better result.
Experimental Design
The pen was cleaned by removing old litter, cleaning and disinfecting the walls, and

floor prior to the arrival of the broiler birds on January 12, 2023. The birds were transported in a

porous box and given water for the first 4 to 5 hours after arrival. They were brooded together

for 4 weeks during brooding they had an area set up with cardboard spread across the concrete, a

hundred-watt bulb to keep them warm and 2 waterer and two feeders placed in the poultry house

during brooding they were given amino growth for 3 days. They were fed broiler ration crumble

pellet being that there so small. During brooding the temperature was checked regularly in the

mornings and the evenings, their feed was changed, litter was turned, and wet litter was

removed, weight was checked and recorded on a weekly basis. When brooding was completed,

the birds were separated into two sets of five (5), the poultry house was blocked off into two

sections, one section was fed with hipro and the other Nutra mix feed ration. The pellet was fed

for up to 5 to 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months) and the crumble for up to 2 weeks. The birds

were weighed every day for week 6 until the slaughter date, we weighed them by placing them in

a crocus bag and then on a scale. They were slaughtered and weighed separately, and their

weight was recorded on a record sheet and set on sale.

Equipment's Used in Poultry House
1.The broom was used to remove dust from the walls and ceiling of the poultry house. This was

done before the birds arrive as a part of sanitization aspect this was done because it could be fire

hazardous for the coop (poultry house). Additionally, this will help provide a cleaner atmosphere

for the chickens to breathe as well as improve their respiratory health.

2.The mop was used to dry the water that was used to wash out the inside of the poultry house. -

The shovel was used to scoop up the remaining dust after the poultry house was dry.

3. Feeders are equipment used to feed the birds, by placing feed in them. They may be

conventional, semi-automatic of various designs and shapes and made of either metal or plastic.

Chickens are messy eaters, and a well-designed feeder will keep food from being scattered

around to become sour and attract vermin, example rats, rodents etc.

4. A record sheet was used to make a record of the broiler chicks' temperature, weight, amount of

feed fed to them and mortality weekly.

5. Light bulb (hundred watt) stimulates the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland through optic

nerve for the release of FSH and LH, it also penetrates through the skull skin and feather of the

baby chicks as well as provide them with warmth that would have been provided by the mother

hen.

6. Killing cone: used to ensure that after slaughtering the chicken is properly bled.
7. Medication (amino growth) used for the prevention and treatment of animal amino growth

deficiency.

8. Sponge (foot bath) used to prevent dirt from shoes or feet from entering the poultry house.

9. Thermometer: used to check the temperature of the poultry house.

10.Wood shaving: reduce smell as it reduces the ammonia in the air that comes out of the poultry

droppings, ammonia can be dangerous to the chickens as well as to the people working on the

farm as it can lead to respiratory damage and eye problems.

11. Newspaper: This was used in the first half of the broiler chicks brooding because they were

too young/small to use wood shaving at the time because it could cause damage to them.
Description of activity

1. Cleaning of poultry house- The poultry house was cleaned with the use of bleach, soap,
Dettol and water. These items were used for the disinfection of any microorganisms or
diseases.
2. Preparation of brooding- The floor of the brooder was constructed 1.5 square feet per
bird, it was covered with cardboard being the fact the broiler chick was young and
couldn’t handle saw dust as it will affect their respiratory system. A hundred-watt bulb
was placed about 1 foot above the floor as the heat source. A drinker and feeder were
placed on the floor with water and feeding.
3. Purchase of chicks- The fifteen (15) broiler chick was bought from St. Jajo Farm

supplies in Wellington Street in Spanish Town.

4. Arrival of chicks- The brooding temperature was measured/checked. The temperature

showed 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 Fahrenheit). They were given water for the first 4-5

hours of their arrival, vitamin (amino growth) was added to the water to boost immune

system.

5. Maintenance of broiler chick- The water and feed level were maintained regularly,

twice a day the chickens were fed depending on the amount of feed left in the feeders.

After two (2) weeks they were fed broiler starter then separated to get separate feedings

HiPro and Nutra mix ration.

6. Weighing of chickens- They were weighed by placing them in a porous bag and putting

them onto the scale. The weight of the chickens was recorded on a record sheet daily to

keep track of the average.

7. Turning of litter- Litter was turned once every day to keep poultry house sanitary and

clean for chicken.

8. Slaughtering- A chicken was taken and knocked unconscious using a blunt object then

put in cut open bottles facing the ground downwards then slaughtered and held by the

feet and twirling about two (2) times in a pot of hot water on wood fire.

9. Dressing of the carcass- The chicken feather was plucked, then the organs of the

chicken were removed after which the chicken was then washed in cool water and then

placed in ice water after the chicken is drained and packaged in a clear bag.

10. Marketing- The was sold to school staff and family members at a cost of $340.
Results / Findings
The growth rate data was collected by weighing three birds each from the 4 sets using a feed bag
and a scale. The birds were weighed once per week, averaged and the average weight per bird
was recorded on a record sheet. Total feed consumed was collected by taking the amount of feed
consumed by the flock and dividing it by the amount of weight gained, in other word input
divided by output, Hipro birds had a (F.C.R) of 1:8:1 and Nutra mix 1:9:1. Based on
investigation carried out nutra mix birds produces a greater growth rate data and f.c.r ( feed
conversion ratio.
Average Weight of Birds

Week 2 1.4 1.4
Week 3 2.3 2.0
Week 4 4.2 4
Week 5 5 4.8
Week 6 6.1 5.8

Table 1: showing broiler birds’ average weight weekly

The growth rate was taken on a weekly basis by randomly selecting a set of 3- 5 birds both hipro
and Nutra mix and weighing them.
An average was taken of these weights and recorded in a broiler rearing production sheet.

Output
Type of Feed Hipro Nutra-mix
Average weight 6.1 5.8
Total live weight 31 29
Total dress weight 25 22

Table 3: Showing the f.c.r of hipro and nutra mix birds.
1. The total amount of feed consumed by the set of birds was recorded, as well as the total
weight the birds reached at slaughtering.
2. The complete feed consumed; weight increase was divided then multiplied by 100.

3. The data received for the hipro and Nutra mix birds were properly documented.

4. Each set of birds were slaughtered, plucked and dressed. Each part was separated
(kidney, liver, gizzard) and the weight was recorded onto a data sheet.

5. Each set of bird slaughtering was carried out independently to avoid the risk of output
errors, the hipro birds output record was different from the Nutra mix birds output.
6. The slaughtered birds from each set were packaged and sold. The price per pound at
which they were sold was the same.
7. Each group of birds' combined weight was multiplied by the selling price and the results
were appropriately recorded.
Hipro
FCR= Total feed consumed (lbs) divided by total live weight (lbs)

Total profit = Total income- Expenditure $153,000- 81743= $71,257.The examination taken
after gathering the results that were grasped for the investigation demonstrated that Hi-pro
broiler birds had a total average weight of 6.1 (lbs ) and Nutra-mix broiler birds an average
weight of 5.8 (lbs). The growth rate of the hi-pro bird was greater compared to the Nutra-mix
birds. The profitable value of the two groups of birds were calculated, Hi-pro $8000 and Nutra-
mix $6880 which therefore means Hi-pro birds are more economically valuable than Nutra-mix.
In the investigation it was clear that Hi-pro broiler birds had a constructive impact on upgrading
their growth rate, weight and decreasing mortality rate. Both sets of birds received the same
treatment, but hi-pro birds were able to produce a higher production rate. On doing research it
came to my notice that hi-pro and Nutra-mix feed are two different sets of feed. H-iPro feed is
more nutritious when compared with its counterpart, Hi-pro feed makes the chicken bigger
therefore it has more meat. Farmers should feed their birds hi-pro feed, they will receive a better
income/profit and get increased meat production.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that the hi-pro broiler birds showed a normal growth and development rate
while the hi-pro feed impacted their growth rate. Therefore, the Hi-pro broiler birds were more
satisfyingly observed than the Nutra-mix birds in the investigation carried out. It’s recommended
that farmers should use hi-pro feed to feed their birds to receive a better profit, income, growth,
FCR and output.
Limitation
1. Manual waterers were being used which took a lot of time and labour
2. Defeathering by hand was not time effective in which the bird got cold, and the feather
were hard to pluck.
Recommendations
1. Install automatic waterers to make it less labour intensive.
2. Install a defeathering machine, which will get things done faster and more
efficiently.
