1.0 Introduction
Philosophy is a comprehensive system of ideas about human nature and the nature of the reality
we live in. It is a guide for living, because the issues it addresses are basic and pervasive,
determining the course we take in life and how we treat other people. Philosophy of education
refers to the principles, attitudes, and beliefs of an individual or an institution regarding how
teaching and learning take place in the school environment. That is, what are the principles that
guide the relationships among students, between students and teachers, and among all the
stakeholders of the institution. In short, your beliefs, values, and understanding of how effective
teaching and learning is conceptualized and practiced is your education philosophy.
For me, philosophy in education is really important at the present time to deeply understand the
educational process. Each fundamental aspect has a basic function in the education process.
The philosophy of education serves as a guideline for teachers to effectively teach their students.
According to Nager & Shapiro (2006), a vision of good teaching must inform decisions about how
to prepare teachers to meet the needs of children in schools. The knowledge can help teachers
understand the nature of the students. Based on that the teacher will adapt their teaching to meet
the needs of the students. The study of the education philosophy will equip the teacher with the
needed values and ethics of the society that are essential. With this, the teacher will transmit
these values to the younger ones. Hence the students will grow up to be responsible.
Progressivism educational philosophy stresses that students should test ideas by active
experimentation. The learner is a problem solver and thinker who makes meaning through his or
her individual experience in the physical and cultural context. According to Lee et al (2012), people
who believe in progressive ideas about education see students as individuals who have the right
to progress at their own pace and they demand that teachers allow that to happen. Effective
teachers provide experiences so that students can learn by doing., teachers must have a thorough
understanding of the ways in which the outside world influences children’s lives (Lee et al 2012).
In a way of education, it can help students to achieve their personality.

2.3 My Students
I’m the counselor in my school. I have a period class for each form & did not require for the
examination. My class size is around 125 to 150. I need to cover one batch for my period class.
My approach is different for each form. My subject is Kemahiran Adab for the lower form (form 1,
form 2 & form 3) & Career Development for the upper form (form 4 & form 5).
For me, students’ needs or learning goals in school are a good attitude. A good attitude is the key
to the student’s success in any field. It can help students to achieve their goals and improve their
thinking, research, analytical, and social skills.
My challenges are to dealing with big class size. According to Fortes & Tchantchane (2010),
dealing with large classes constitutes a real challenge to every teacher such as diversity of
students, lack of flexibility, class climate management, difficulty of setting and enforcing classroom
behaviour (crowd control), minimum attention to students, limited monitoring of students’ learning
and difficulty in engaging students to activities. Then, behavior issues among the students
increase with class size. As a teacher, I can’t control all the students during the class. Some
students may sleep, some students may speak each other and some students may focus during
the class. Large class sizes greatly limit my style of teaching may I use during the class. More
students mean less flexibility for the teacher. I can’t do many things to make different during my
class.
2.4 My Teaching Goals
As a teacher, I have two teaching goals which are
• To foster student learning and development by supporting students in their academic,
personal, and social growth.
• To get students well prepared for their future.
For me, the student needs to be well developed as a person and well prepared to them enter the
society as a good person. The function of teachers is to help students learn by imparting
knowledge to them and by setting up a situation in which students can and will learn effectively.
To ensure students’ interest and engagement with me, I need to revise & improve my knowledge
to keep new knowledge in the class because I teach them about life lesson. Then, I tried my best
to keep my good relationship with all the students.
Conclusion
In conclusion, education philosophy provides the educational planners, administrators and
educators with the progressive vision to achieve educational development. As a teacher, I need
to have my own philosophy to give me a guide to achieve my teaching goals.
To be a great teacher, I always need to revise & improve my knowledge to give the best for all
my students during the lesson. I have my own goals, I have many years to go and I have many
objectives to achieve. Then, I must keep resilience as a teacher and be better in the future.
