Gr11 Math 07 February 2024

The document discusses solving equations by using completing the square. It provides an example of solving the equation x^2 + x - 2 = 0 by rewriting it as (x - 1)(x + 2) = 0 and obtaining the solutions x = 1 or x = -2. It then solves the same equation using the completing the square method and arrives at the same solutions.

Solving Equations by using Completing the Square

𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝑥2 + 𝑥 − 2 = 0
𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 2𝑥 − 2 = 0 →→ 𝑥(𝑥 − 1) + 2(𝑥 − 1) = 0
(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 2) = 0 ∴ 𝑥 − 1 = 0 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 + 2 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = 1 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −2

𝑈𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒: 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 = 2

1 1 1
𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + (2 × 1)2 = 2 + (2)2
1 1 9
(𝑥 + 2)2 = 2 + 4 = 4

2
√(𝑥 + 1) = ±√(9)
2 4

1 3 1 3
𝑥 +2 = ±2 ∴ 𝑥 = − 2 ± 2 = 1𝑜𝑟 − 2 𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑣𝑒
