Example 9. Figure 5-IOa shows a space frame having three members, four joints, six degrees offreedom {at joint A), and eighteen restraints (six at each of the points B, C, and D). The frame is loaded at joint A With a force P in the negative z direction and a moment PL in the negative x sense. In addition, a force ‘of magnitude P acting in the negative z direction is applied at the middle of member AB, and a force P acting in the negative y direction is applied at the middle of member AD. All members in the frame have 8 principal plane XM-YM that containsthe point p indicated in Fig. 5-IOa, Point p is located in the plane containing joints B, C, and D (that is, the x-y plane). Any point on the line pA (except point A) would Suffice to define the principal planes in this problem. Since a principal plane for member AB is parallel to the y axis, the angle a is taken to be zero for this member. However, for members AC and AD the Principal planes are located by giving the coordinates of point p. (Example 2 continued on p. 364.) The cross-sectional properties ofall members are assumed to be the same, and the numerical constants in the problem are as follows: dx=64 in’ [y=28 in’ G= 4,000 ksi Av= 9 in? y<<3-D Frame Analysis >> -— ‘Space Frame Ex 1 W&G Pg No 364 (132101020 Yewale Dhanashri S.) peseee NN NE nm | NDIM[ NEN | NON | NNREF — 6 5 1 3 2 8 4 — ND Nu | NMPC Eaee 18 4 0 Node# x Y Zz es 1 128 96 72 L 2 128 192 0 - 3 0 0 0 4 256 0 0 aan — 5 128 144 36 eS 7 ~ 6 192 48 36 uae — 7 128 96 0 Elem# Nt N2 | Ref_Pt| Mat Area ly Iz J} UDLy'| ub (eee 1 5 7 1 9 28 80 64 o 2 5 2 7 1 8 28 80 64 o 3 1 3 7 1 8 28; 80 64 0; ea 4 1 6 7 He eae 9 28 80 64 of 5 6 4 7 1 9 28 | 80 64 ol] DOF# | Disp. | 7 0 8 0 9 0 | 10 0 14 0 12 a ae - 13 0 a 14 0 : 16 oO 16 oO 7 0 18 0 19 0 20 0 24 0 22 0 23 0 24 0 DOF# | Load 3 6 4 =120 27 5 32 5 MATH E 6 1 | 1.00E+04 [4.0003 Bt i B2 j [83 | (multi-point constr.
