“Countries should ban abortion.” Oppose.
first speaker
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removal of an embryo or foetus. When deliberate
steps are taken to end the pregnancy, it is called an “induced abortion” with modern methods
consisting of medication or surgery. According to the United Nations Population Fund, about half of
all pregnancies are unintended, totalling 121 million unintended pregnancies. Many of these women
do not want a baby because of reasons ranging from inability to afford a child or wishing to complete
education or advance a career to reluctance to raise a child conceived through rape. By banning
abortion, we are robbing them of a chance at the life that they want.
This long-standing debate over abortion was further fuelled by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to
overturn Roe V. Wade, a landmark decision which protects a pregnant individual’s freedom to have an
abortion. This led to many arguments from both “pro-life” and “pro-choice” protestors. While one
side believes that abortion is terrible because it is the killing of a baby and is immoral and unethical,
the other believes that the mother should be able to choose and make her own decisions. We as
today’s opposition team believe that abortion should not ban abortion and that it should be available to
all woman who are capable of making such a decision. Our second speaker, Saharsh, will elaborate
more on the points that I have raised.

Abortion is something that all women should have as
- there are approximately 750,000 teen pregnancies in the world every year. If abortion was
illegal, these children
- the termination of a pregnancy by removal of an embryo or foetus
- if abortion is banned, people will decide to take matters into their own hands and perform
unsafe abortions. these are abortions performed by people lacking the skills or resources. it
also causes about 5 to 13% of maternal deaths. this can be avoided by making abortion legal
- In contrast, unsafe abortions performed by unskilled individuals, with hazardous equipment, or in
unsanitary facilities cause 47,000 deaths and 5 million hospital admissions each year.
- Reasons include maternal health,[6][7] an inability to afford a child, domestic violence, lack of
support, feeling they are too young, wishing to complete education or advance a career,[8] and not
being able or willing to raise a child conceived as a result of rape or incest.[7]
- The World Health Organization states that "access to legal, safe and comprehensive abortion care,
including post-abortion care, is essential for the attainment of the highest possible level of sexual
and reproductive health"
- There is debate over abortion with regard to moral, religious, ethical, and legal issues.[31][32] Those
who oppose abortion often argue that an embryo or fetus is a person with a right to life, and thus
equate abortion with murder.[33][34] Those who support the legality of abortion often argue that it is a
woman's reproductive right.[35] Others favor legal and accessible abortion as a public health
measure.
- fetus is a person
- public health measure
- opposers of abortion argue that an embryo or foetus is a person with a right to life
- ADOPTION - in cases where the mother is not financially capable of having a baby, adoption,
too, is not an option. the mother will also not be able to give birth to the baby as it ranges
from about $7000 to $10000 to have a baby.
- my body my choice
- caused by rape
- mother might die
- not financially capable
- teen pregnancy
- baby might have complications
