APPLICANT'S GUIDE

COMPENTECY BASED INTERVIEWS AT UNESCO

Purpose
Also known as behavioral interviews, Competency Based Interviews (CBI) are a
structured interviewing method, in which you are asked to share examples from
past experiences describing your behavior in a specific situation. Past behavior is
the best indicator of future performance. At UNESCO, we use CBI to determine
how likely it is that you manage future situations in a specific manner based on
previous experience.

that will be key to being successful in the position.

platform. Interviews usually do not last more than 45 minutes.

Test your device beforehand and ensure that you have a stable internet connection.

Sit in a well-lit room, avoiding sitting in front of a window to avoid screen glare. Avoid
distractions and background noise.

Be aware of non-verbal communication.

Listen to the question carefully and be ready for probing questions. Be as specific as
possible in your responses.

Use “I” format to explain your role in the situation and the specific steps you took.

Use action verbs to describe concrete actions and results. Quantify your answers where
applicable.

Stay calm. Good preparation is the key to staying in control.
