CHAPTER 1
The Problem
Introduction
Deciding on which career to pursue is a vital process in the lives of
Senior High School students. Career choice and decision making are critical
aspects of an individual’s life that can have a significant impact on their future
success and well-being. Choosing a career path that aligns with one’s
interest, skills, and values can lead to a fulfilling and satisfying professional
life. Understanding the factors that affect career aspirations and decision-
making is essential, for educators, policymakers, and individual themselves
to provide appropriate support and guidance to students and young adults. It
is this period when they have to decide on what major to take in college.
Senior high school students require a lot of professional guidance
particularly when it comes to selecting a career choice. Students are given
advice throughout this time to get ready for future worthwhile careers. It is
when high school where students starts to feel tangibly about career
preferences. He cited, Castillo (1963), who stressed the redirection and
guidance of the high school youth because; it is in that stage where skills,
capacities and decisions are developed. The youth should get a through
picture of their aspirations and expectations. Making a profession option is
an important stage in every student’s life.
Young students have diverse dreams and interests in life. There is an
old adage which inspires people to successed: stated that, “If there is a will,
there is a way” .In choosing a career, suitability to the interest of the students
is given importance. Students must know on what degree to pursue in
college, one that interest them and must also fit their abilities so that it will not
be hard for them to choose the right career path.
It is therefore that choosing a career is an extremely important decision
that impacts an individual’s entire future. Career exploration is defined as the
extent to which possible careers are researched and considered.
Olaosebikan et.al (2014) has suggested that exploring career options before
commiting to a career increases future career success and satisfaction.
Onyejiaku et.al (2005), who defines occupation as a means of living, which
has power to change personalities, determined social status, predict
expected earnings.
It’s in this stage when teenager needs guidance in the proper
sekection of their desired career. Where they can choose the right decisions
considering their innate capacities, educational privilege offered to the
sudents and other resources that society makes available for them to be more
efficient and effective (Deparment of Education 2017)
According to the theory of vocational development by Super (2005),
the students should first become aware of the need for a career. So every
graduating students need a wise choice in decision making. Buatista (1997)
stated that at this stage, a student must take important and vital decision in
the selection of a career which will determine the future success.
