Exam 04032021

The document is an exam for an elasticity theory module covering 6 questions related to stress, strain, and material properties: 1) The first question involves calculating stress components after rotation, normal/shear stress on a plane, and relating results. 2) The second question involves sketching and calculating properties of a given stress tensor including principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and stress invariants. 3) The third question involves using Mohr's circle to analyze a plane stress problem and show stresses and principal stresses/angles.

Lecturer: Stefan Luding
Time: 13:45 – 16:45
Date: 04-03-2021
Permitted examination materials: open book + calculator + formula sheet
Total points: 100

Manage your time wisely according to the points of questions. Success!

1 Traction vector [15 points]

 of stress ata point with respect to a Cartesian coordinate system, x − y − z, is given by:
The state
2 1 0
  
σij = 1 3 −2 MPa

0 −2 1
Determine:
a) What are the stress components with respect to axes rotated by 45◦ around the y direction. √ √
b) Use Cauchy’s law to evaluate the normal and shear stress on a plane with normal ~n = (1/ 2)e1 + (1/ 2)e3 .
c) What is the relation between normal and shear stress calculated on (b) part with the components of stress tensor
calculated on (a). Relate your results.

2 True stress tensor [30 points]

The component
 matrix
 of the stress tensor is given as:
2 4 0
  
σij = 4 8 0  MPa

0 0 10

Hint: Using terms like 13 or 2 during calculation is accepted (recommended) for the sake of simplicity.
a) Sketch the given stress tensor (arrows and numbers) on the surface of a cube with coordinates.
b) Calculate the principal stresses (eigenvalues) of the given tensor.
c) Give the value of the maximum possible shear stress.
d) Determine the three principal directions.
e) Determine the deviatoric stress tensor.
f) Calculate the 1st, 2nd and 3rd invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor.
g) Calculate the von-Mises and Tresca equivalent stress.
h) What are they based on? Which equivalent stress criterion is safer? And why?

3 Mohr’s circle [20 points]

A state of plane stress consists of: σxx = 10kPa, σyy = −15kPa, σxy = 20kPa, all other components equal to zero.
a) Calculate the principal stresses, σI and σII , and their corresponding principal angles, θI and θII , and show all
of these on your Mohr’s circle construction.
b) Graphically determine the maximum shear stress, τmax , and its corresponding angle and show on your Mohr’s
circle construction.
c) Draw the original unrotated element (stress square 2d) and indicate stresses on the square. Draw the rotated
stress square in the eigen-system of this vector and indicate principal stresses on it. Note, you need to draw 3-
elements, unrotated, rotated along principal stresses, and rotated along maximum shear stress.

Assume that both members of the truss have the same axial rigidity EA.
a) Determine the strain energy of the two bars.
b) Determine the vertical displacement δB of joint B of the truss shown in the figure.
