Lightning Guide

Based on our new course


In this presentation we want to show how you can set up lighting based on

Zarrina’s works.
When all objects are modeled and
materials are created, let's deal with
light.

Let’s add HDRI lightning to the scene.


To do that go to shading tab and
change shader type to world.

First, duplicate background node and


add mix shader to that. Next add light
path node and connect is camera ray
to factor.

Add image texture node, press Ctrl+T


and change texture coordinate to
generated. Connect the nodes and
select HDRI.
You can download some HDRI from the
internet or find one in blender asset
here

Now play with the settings in mapping


node until you are happy with the
result.

With the top node you can control the


strength of the HDRI. With the bottom
node you can control the colour of the
background. Here we have the plane
so we don’t need to change to colour of
the background
Now let’s add sun to the scene

To add light sources press Shift + A and

select Light - Sun.

Place the sun so that it highlights the

character's face. Put the strength on 1

Add area light to the scene. Move it up

and scale. Change the strength to 200.

Change the colour to something

warmer
Now duplicate the area light and put it
in front. Change the colours. Change
the shape to disk

Duplicate again and move it to the


side. Change the colour to cold

Duplicate again and move it to the


back. Change the shape to disk.
Change the strength to 300 and
colour. We should get beautiful
highlight on the head.
Add point light and place it in front to
get nice highlights on the ice. Change
the radius, colour and the strength

Duplicate point light and move it to left


the side. Change the colour to warm

Duplicate again, move it closer to the


props. Change the strength and radius
Duplicate the point light once again
and move it to the left side closer to the
plants. Change the colour to colder

Place point light near laptop. It will


create interesting highlight. Change
the colour

Add more point lights near the


character until you like the result.
Change the colour and radius
Go to HDRI settings again and tweak
the strength

Now play with the lights, tweak the


settings, change the colour and
strength until you are happy with the
result
After tweaking the lights adjust your
background so you character looks
better. Here you can change the colour
to colder
Select camera, enable depth of field,
pick the head for the focus object and
set f-stop to 0.6

Press Ctrl+A and add a cube to the


scene. Scale it up and make something
like a room.

Go to viewport display and change


display as to wire
Change the colour of the cube to
something darker.

You may notice that the colour contrast


has changed

Go to viewport display and change


display as to wire
Let’s render the image. See render settings at the end
of this guide
You may also disable colours and make beautiful clay
and wireframe render
Alternative Lightning

Night scene
First switch a lamp and a clock

Change the material of light bulb. Add


emission strength and colour

Now change the background to the


darker
Change the colour of most lights to
colder or delete them once you like the
result

Add point light near light bulb

Now go to HDRI settings and put


strength down
Let’s make some cute particles. Add a
cube, scale it down, move it up and
add a subdivision modifier. Right click
- shade smooth

Now add emission material to the


cube. Duplicate and place the paricles
around the scene

You can place particles like this


That's how we got the scene with this lighting
Render

In the Output settings set the desired


resolution. In my case I will make the
format under the video Reels.

Set the image format: In the Output


section you can choose the image
format, such as PNG, JPEG or other.

Define the save path: In the same


Output section, specify the path to save
the rendered images.

In the Render tab we have selected


Render Engine => Cycles.

In the parameter Render => Max


Samples I set it to 1500.

But you can change the number of


samples depending on your PC
capabilities and needs. The more
samples - the less noise, better image
quality and longer rendering time.
