Group Newton Chapter 2

This chapter provides an overview of previous research on students' insights on the functionality of school libraries. It introduces the qualitative phenomenological research design that is the focus of the study. The conceptual framework that will be used is the input-process-output model to show how student insights on the functionality of the school library will be determined. Several sources discuss how school libraries support educational goals by providing educational resources, serve as resource centers for learning, and foster the development of literacy and reading skills.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter provides an overview of previous research on Students

Insights on the Functionality of the School Library. It introduces the

frameworks for the Qualitative Phenomenological Research Design that

comprises the main focus of the research described in this study.

The conceptual framework that will be used in the study is the Input-Process-

Output (IPO) Model as shown in figure 1. The (IPO) framework will be used to show

the process done in knowing the student’s insights on the functionality of the school

library. By engaging in the process of gathering and analyzing of data and

information through questionnaires and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), the outcome

of the variables in the input will be determined in the output, in that way the

researchers will gather enough data and information for this study.
Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on Pakistyaningsih et al… (2022). The initial

stipulations for the utilization of the Bubutan IV Surabaya High School library

indicate that there are nonetheless some indications that are still now not in

line with the standards. The effects of the preliminary learn about on the initial

prerequisites of library utilization also showed that students’ studying interest

was nonetheless lacking, students' analyzing capacity was once nevertheless

lacking, specially reading potential used to be not accompanied by using a

exact grasp of the books that have been read and understanding subject of

the books that have been read.

Principals of private elementary and middle schools. A school library is

essential to achieving educational goals. Its primary purpose is to provide

access to educational materials that enable teachers and students to develop

proper reading and study habits and effectively use these resources as

educational tools. A library serves as a resource center, a place to read

books, get advice, create materials, and most importantly, a place to teach

and learn. Libraries are an important and integral part of a school, so they

need to be the center of attention. A functioning library is mandatory for all

elementary and secondary schools. According to guidelines on supplementary

teaching materials for public primary and secondary schools, school libraries

must obtain sufficient copies of textbooks, guidebooks, etc. DECS

headquarters, regional offices, or school administrators should review school

libraries on a regular basis. (Gloria, Secretary of Deped, 1998)

A library is so much more than just a place to obtain books, even putting

aside the significant shortcomings of the internet as a source of fact-based

and unbiased knowledge and the fact that a shockingly sizable portion of our

society lacks access to it. It is a place where people get together, where

people can find useful assistance, where kids can learn about the sciences,

and where free lessons are offered on how to establish a business, plan for

retirement, or do genealogical research. It is also one of the last institutions in

western civilization where people are treated as individuals rather than as

prospective customers. (Lynn McAlister, 2022)

A fantastic opportunity to give struggling pupils a place to get tutoring is

in the school library. Students and tutors may interact in a safe setting where

inquiries are welcome. Not to add, there would be no interruptions from other

students. One of the reasons why a school library is crucial for children is that

it offers a welcoming environment for learning. It provides a chance for one-

on-one interaction and open discussion between a student and instructor.

Additionally, it makes it possible for study groups to choose a location to

convene and study challenging subject. Over time, this peaceful setting can

benefit kids' overall scores and help them become better at studying alone.

(Martin Public Seating, 2023)

The goal of your school library is to support the development of new

knowledge, skills, and learning and personal development dispositions in all

members of your school community, including students, staff, families.

Children and youth are educated at schools. By offering resources that

directly address the curriculum and encourage reading outside of it, libraries
support this goal. Staff members in the library are educating patrons on

information and critical literacy techniques in an effort to foster autonomous

and inquisitive learners. The library provides users with access to a wider

variety of materials than they would otherwise have, thanks to a carefully

selected selection that is geared not just to the curriculum at each given

school but also to the age and skills of the student body and the school

personnel. (Dawn Woods, Member Development Librarian & School Library

Association (SLA) , 2021)

Visiting the library enhances reading. Your kids get access to literature

thanks to libraries. According to research, having access to books frequently

improves your reading skills. The selection of books at the library is extensive.

Reading skills are improved when you choose books for yourself to read

aloud and for your kids to read alone. When they choose their own books,

they become enthusiastic readers. Numerous options are available in libraries

that help readers grow. Additionally, studies show that kids who regularly visit

the library read more proficiently than their peers. Compared to their peers

who didn't frequent the library frequently, preschool story hour attendees have

better pre-reading and emergent literacy skills when they start school.

(Pamela Hall, 2019)

Students need to have the most access to materials that can be used

to study in order to develop into functional individuals. Encyclopedias,

computers, and books all offer the knowledge kids require to learn and

develop their intelligence. Students won't learn anything if a school building is

too small to accommodate these essential materials. Therefore, educational

facilities offer school libraries to both employees and students. For students to
freely explore, these libraries offer hundreds of thousands of books and other

reading and study materials. Additionally, it is a peaceful location for studying,

working on projects, and tutoring. Here are a few explanations on why a

school library is so important to students' development. (Martin Public

Seating, 2023)

Higher education libraries are undergoing significant spatial changes,

converting facilities once used for book storage into spaces for interaction and

moving from individualized to collaborative study. In this study, space uses

are identified, environmental satisfaction, productivity support, and perceived

productivity dependent on space are examined, and their links are tested.

According to 66 survey replies, students continue to use the library for solitary

study, and those who spend time in quiet areas report feeling comfortable in

their surroundings. (Yujin Kim, 2021)

The library is a vital component of any academic institution, acting as a

key resource center for students, teachers, researchers, and others. As

technology advances, libraries need to adapt to the shift towards digital

resources and ensure they provide a conducive study environment that meets

users' specific needs. This study aims to determine the essential requirements

for a seamless study experience and efficient knowledge organization in the

University Technology Brunei Library, which caters to the needs of both

undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty members. The library

constantly improves its services to offer students the best possible

experience. (Munohsamy, 2016)

Because literacy is vital to every subject taught in the school

curriculum, a strong middle school literacy program is crucial to ensure that all
students achieve their maximum academic potential. Many proponents of

literacy programs for struggling readers seem to concur on the importance of

a strong library, sometimes known as a library media center (Cunningham &

Allington, 2010).

The school library plays a vital role in promoting the education system

as it greatly affects student learning and achievement. Its diverse resources

such as books, journals, databases, and multimedia materials provide

students with essential learning tools and contribute to the development of

their literacy skills. However, little research has been conducted to explore

students' perceptions of the school library's function in learning and their

motivators for reading. Therefore, understanding students' opinions about the

school library and their incentives for reading is crucial for developing effective

strategies to support learning and promote reading. The main aim of this

study is to examine students' attitudes towards the school library's role in

learning and their reasons for reading (Turan & Yildirim, 2019)
