OUTCOME BASED EDUCATION
AND
OUTCOME BASED ACCREDITATION
What is Accreditation?....

Formal recognition of an
educational Program / Institution
by an external agency on the basis of
impartial assessment of the
attainment of specific requirements
against well defined criteria
What is Accreditation?....
It is a status and process
• As a status
– provides public notification that
institute/program meets standards of
quality set-forth by an accrediting agency
• As a process
– in achieving the recognition, the
institution/program is committed to self-
study and external review by one’s peers in
seeking not only to meet standards but to
continuously seek ways in which to enhance
the quality of education
Who are the Accrediting Bodies?....

Institutional
National Accreditation and Assessment
Council (NAAC) - UGC and

Program
National Board of Accreditation (NBA) –
Professional institutions.

Accreditation through a combination of

internal and external quality assessment
Objectives of NBA?....

To assess and accredit professional

programs (diploma level to
postgraduate level in engineering and
technology, management, pharmacy,
architecture, and related disciplines)
offered by the technical institutions on
the basis of norms prescribed by NBA
Who are the Stake holders involved in the
process?....
Students Educational institutions
Parents Government
Alumni Regulators and
Recruiters Academicians
Industry
Corporate
Significance of Accreditation....

• National Level
• Students and parents to select the institution and
programs offered by them for admission

• Employers in deciding about recruitment of

graduates

• Institutions in deciding about accepting the

transfer of students from other institutions

• To encourage the institute to move continuously

towards the improvement of quality of its
programme, and the pursuit of excellence
Significance of Accreditation....

• International Level
• Acceptability of the Academic Qualification

• To attain international recognition of accredited

degree/diploma awarded

• Mobility of students for pursuing higher studies

and employment in other countries

• Registration of professionals abroad where

required by law

Outcome Based Education Paradigm

“Outcome-based education means starting with a

clear picture of what is important for students to be
able to do, then organising the curriculum,
instruction, and assessment to make sure that this
learning ultimately happens.” (Spady, 1994)

8
Outcome Based Education Philosophy
Begin with the End in Mind……

Set Clear Educational Goals (Outcomes)

and then
Design Educational Process that enables
the students to meet those goals
Curriculum Design

Traditional Approach Outcome Based Approach

Content Driven – Outcome Driven –
Inputs are important Results are important
Focus is on Focus is on
• Subject Matter • Content as a vehicle to
• Covering Curriculum attain Outcomes
• Tests Designed to • Outcomes dictate
assess student Mastery Teaching / learning and
over Content assessment strategies

The ‘Essence’ of OBE

1. In education, what matters ultimately is not what is taught, but what

is learned;
2. Therefore for each program we need to formulate intended
learning outcomes.
3. What we teach and how we teach, and how we assess, ought to
be aligned with the intended learning outcomes,
4. The quality of teaching is to be judged by the quality of learning
that takes place.

Vision of the Institution

To be university as a resource of solution to

diverse challenges of society by nurturing
innovation, research and enterpreneurship
through value based education
Mission of the Institution

•To provide work culture that facilitates

effective teaching-learning process and
lifelong learning skills

•To promote innovation, collaboration and

leadership through best practices

•To foster industry-institute interaction

resulting in entrepreneurship skills and
employment opportunities
Vision of the Department

To achieve excellence in education and research

for developing globally competent, ethically
sound electronics & communication engineers.
Mission of Department

•To provide a conducive environment for learning

through structured student centric, teaching-
learning process

•To nurture needs of society by infusing scientific

temper in students and to grow as a centre of
excellence with efficient industry-institute interaction

•To inculcate self learning skills, entrepreneurial

ability and professional ethics
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

Graduates will be able to:

PEO1 : Contemplate real-time social problems
and deliver efficient solutions.

PEO2 : Lead and succeed in professional

careers.

PEO3 : Contribute through research and

entrepreneurship.
Program Specific Outcomes PSOs

Graduates in the UG program in Electronics and

communication engineering will be able to:

PSO1: Design, verify and develop analog and

digital systems by using state of art technology
to contribute to the societal needs.

PSO2: Apply the knowledge in various domains

of IoT, real time systems,
communication systems, VLSI and embedded
systems, image and signal processing using
hardware and software tools.
PEOs, POs & PSOs

PSO: at the end of

Programme

They are the statements that describe the expected

achievements of graduates within first few years of their
graduation from the programme.
Programme Outcomes (POs)

 Competencies, skills, knowledge and

proficiency the student is expected to attain at the
time of graduation.

 The outcomes essentially indicate what a

student can do from subject-domain knowledge
acquired during the programme.
Improving the Structure & Quality of Assessment

3 Design/development of solutions Outcomes
4 Conduct investigations of complex problems
5 Modern tool usage
6 The engineer and society
7 Environment and sustainability Professional
8 Ethics Outcomes
9 Individual and team work

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

Programme specific competencies, skills, knowledge
and proficiency the student is expected to attain at the time of
graduation. 16
1. Engineering Knowledge Apply the knowledge of
mathematics, science,
engineering fundamentals, and
an engineering specialization to
the solution of complex
engineering problems

2. Problem Analysis Identify, formulate, research

literature, and analyze complex
engineering problems reaching
substantiated conclusions using
first principles of mathematics,
natural sciences, and engg
sciences
4. Conduct investigations of complex problems

The problems
• that cannot be solved by straightforward application of
knowledge, theories and techniques applicable to the engineering
discipline.
• that may not have a unique solution. For example, a design
problem can be solved in many ways and lead to multiple possible
solutions.
• that require consideration of appropriate constraints/
requirements not explicitly given in the problem statement. (like:
cost, power requirement, durability, product life, etc.).
• which need to be defined (modeled) within appropriate
mathematical framework.
• that often require use of modern computational concepts and
tools
5. Modern Tool Usage Create, select, and apply
appropriate techniques,
resources, and modern
engineering and IT tools
including prediction and
modeling to complex
engineering activities with an
understanding of the limitations

6. The engineer and society Apply reasoning informed by

the contextual knowledge to
assess societal, health, safety,
legal, and cultural issues and
the consequent responsibilities
relevant to the professional
engineering practice
3. Design/Development of Solutions

Design solutions for complex engineering problems and

design system components or processes that meet
specified needs with appropriate consideration for the
public health and safety, cultural, societal, and
environmental considerations
7. Environment and Understand the impact of the
sustainability professional engineering
solutions in societal and
environmental contexts, and
demonstrate the knowledge of,
and need for sustainable
development

8. Ethics Apply ethical principles and

commit to professional ethics
and responsibilities
and norms of the engineering
practice
9. Individual and team work Function effectively as an
individual, and as a member or
leader in diverse teams, and in
multidisciplinary settings

10. Communication Communicate effectively on

complex engineering activities
with the engineering community
and with society at large, such
as, being able to comprehend
and write effective reports and
design documentation, make
effective presentations, and give
and receive clear instructions
11. Project management and Demonstrate knowledge and
finance understanding of the
engineering and management
principles and apply these to
one’s own work, as a member
and leader in a team, to manage
projects and in multidisciplinary
environments

12. Life-long learning Recognize the need for, and

have the preparation and ability
to engage in independent and
life-long learning in the broadest
context of technological change
