Edls411 Assignment 1

The document describes a physical science lesson where a teacher introduces students to physical quantities. The teacher defines physical quantities as anything that can be measured and has the students provide examples. The teacher lists length, time, mass, and temperature as the fundamental physical quantities. The class discusses the standard units (meters for length, seconds for time) and symbols (m, s) for these quantities. As homework, students are asked to identify the standard units and symbols for mass and temperature.

Topic: Physical Quantities

Teacher: Good morning class and how are you this morning?
Students: Good morning Mr. Koimo, we are fine and how are you?
Teacher: For me, I am much more better and optimistic. For our today lesson we will talk a lot. I will make sure
everyone one of you will talk. The topic for this lesson is physical Quantity. But before we move on, I want us
as a class to define physical Quantities and also list them. So, who can define the term physical quantity? Please
raise your hands so that I can pick?
Students A: Physical quantity is a physical amount of things that can be seen and felt.
Teacher: Okay, your definition given will be written on the board, I am expecting three definition of physical
Quantity from you and then, we will make comparison with its real definition.
Student B: A Physical Quantity simply refers to an amount of an object or anything.
Student C: A physical quantity is anything that can be measured.
Teacher: Okay, as you can see up on the blackboard , the three definitions of physical Quantity you guys have
given are written as well the actual definition. So what we will do is to make comparison and see which
definition align the actual physical quantity definition. Okay, of the three definitions, which of them is closely
align to the actual physical quantity definition?
Student D: For me, I can say that the definition that go in line with the actual definition is the 3 rd definition.
Teacher: Okay class, are you agree with her that the 3rd definition best suits the physical quantity’s’ definition?
Whole Class: yes!
Teacher: Off course that was what I have seen also. Now we just knew the definition of physical Quantity and
it simply means anything measurable or anything that can be measured. In regards to the definition, can you
think of anything that can be measured? Anything, like you name it.
Student E: A book, we can use a ruler to measure it.
Teacher: Very good, but can you tell us what particular physical quantity is the ruler you mentioned is
measuring? Or what are you actually trying to measure using the ruler.
Student F: We are measuring the sides of book.
Teacher: yes good but the proper name given to these sides are what? Can someone brave can tell the class.
Okay let me give you a clue. We said physical Quantities are measurable figures, objects, substances, etc.. We
are able to measure them and find their values or magnitude as possible as we can. Off course a book is
measurable, its side can be measured using ruler. But the question is, what is that physical quantity of the book
that the ruler is actually angled to measure it.
Student G: We are actually measuring the length of the book.
Teacher: Excellent, this answer is what I am expecting. Length is one of a basic physical quantity. Anything that
has length are measurable at their lengths. Nevertheless, who can give me another physical quantity?
Student H: The time
Teacher: Did you all hear that, oh very good boy. Time is also the fundamental physical quantity that we
measure. We measure months using calendar and measure days using hours and on. Evidently, I now can tell
from my immediate observation that your guys are beginning to think. Come on, think deep and give me more
physical Quantities. What will another physical quantity be?
Student I: We can measure weight of substance so weight is a physical quantity.
Teacher: Yes good but the correct term would be mass. Weight is mass calculated using gravitational
acceleration, as we proceed on to the yet to come lesson, you will learn it. Okay another clue would be that
would you be able to measure how hot or cold an object or place is? I mean the hotness and coldness of
anything. Would you?
Student I: Yes
Teacher: Okay can you name that physical quantity? Or what is actually measured? When measure the
magnitude of the hotness or coldness of a thing, what are you actually measuring?
Student J: The temperature
Teacher: Very good, the temperature is another fundamental physical quantity. What is the normal room
temperature?
Student J: 25° Celsius.
Teacher. Yes good. I will now recommend you to take out your exercise book, I will put short notes on the
board, you copied them into to your books.
As you all know, when I start you start, when I finish you finish.
Okay pens down and all look up. Now the topic for this lesson is physical quantity and the definition of it is
defined by us as it is also stated on the board also. Below are short notes but you read on your own time. The
main thing is the table below that I want us to fill the missing columns. As you can see on the first column are
four physical Quantities that we have mentioned. On the second column is named unit on its heading. For
instance lets find the unit for length. Like for instance when you give a measurement of length, what unit do
you use in writing answer?
Student K: Meters and kilometers.
Teacher: Very good, the simple standard unit of length used globally is meter. On the other hand and the final
column is the column of symbol. In regards to the unit of length which is meters, what would its symbol be?
Student K: m.
Teacher: Very good, the symbol for meter is small letter m. Like for instance 12m or 24m.
Likewise what would be the standard unit of time?
Student L: Seconds
Teacher: Good, and what would its symbol be?
Student M: S
Teacher: Good its symbol is small letter s. You may be given hours or minutes in problems to solve and you
must make sure to convert them to seconds before proceed with calculation.
For your homework, you do the same for mass and temperature. We will make correction on our next contact
lesson. Is that understood?
Class: Yes!
Teacher: Well that all for today’s lesson and see you next time. Oh and you all have a nice day.
Student: Yes thank you and same to you.
