Module 1 Communication Models

The document discusses communication models and their elements. It introduces several classic models of communication including Aristotle's model which focuses on the speaker, Laswell's model of who says what through which channel to whom with what effect, and Shannon-Weaver's model of a sender, encoder, channel, decoder and receiver. It also discusses David Berlo's SMCR model of the source, message, channel and receiver. The document outlines the key elements of communication as the source, message, channel, environment, feedback, interference and receiver. It classifies different types of noise or interference that can inhibit communication.

Models of Communication
4

 According to Mortensen (2008),

the communication model is a
systematic representation of an
object or event in an idealized
and abstract form.
 To help us understand how the
process works and knowing the
flow of communication will make
the communication more
effective.

Aristotle’s Communication Model
5

 The speaker is the center of

the communication process.
 This is also known as
the linear communication
model.
 The speaker delivers the
message to the audience.
 Aristotle emphasized that
there are three variables in
the communication
process: speaker,
speech, and audience.

Laswell’s Communication Model
6

 Harold Dwight Laswell described

communication as being focused on
the following W’s:
 Who says What in Which channel
to Whom and with What effect.
 The whole process of
communication begins with the
communicator (who) sending out a
message (what) using a medium (in
which channel) for a receiver (to
whom) experiencing an effect (with
what effect) afterward.

Shannon – Weaver’s Communication Model
7

 The Shannon and Weaver

Model of Communication argues
that human communication can be
broken down into 6 key concepts:
➢ sender, encoder, channel,
noise, decoder, and receiver.

David Berlo’s Communication Model
8

 This model is most probably the

most well - known among the
communication models.
 Initially, this model was called
SMCR which stands for the
sender of the message sent
through a channel or medium to
a receiver.
 The major variables involved in
the communication process are
(1) source (2) message (3)
channel and (4) receiver.

In summary
19

✓ The models of communication are the attempts to lay down the

scientific study of human communication processes.
✓ Communication comes in various shapes and forms, but the
elements involved remain constant.
✓ We cannot eliminate noise, but we can maximize the elements
in order to practice communication at optimum levels.
