INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY OF CAMBODIA I3-GAR REPORT YEAR 2022-2023

ABSTRACT
Everyone who has been keeping up their higher education, even top rank or bottom
rank students in any major mostly might be accustomed to believe that all of you have
already been under a lot of pressure during your studies with unintelligible lessons along with
mountain of assignments as well as some research which the professor has instructed to do in
a short time. However, these are just a few things you had experienced in college compared

to life after you have graduated.

Most of the time we can't learn everything in college, but there are so many things we
never knew or learned. Therefore, the Cambodia Institute of Technology developed an
internship program for students so that these students could gain work experience in the
company they worked for and demonstrate what they learned from the internship by
submitting a written report to their department.

At the same time, I am also a junior in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Civil
Engineering, Cambodia Institute of Technology, and I also have the responsibility of writing
a report. I was accepted for an internship at BilGreat Construction Co., Ltd., specializing in
finishing works. The training took place from September 1 to October 6, 2023. During this
time, I learned many new things. That said, in this report I will write about some work that I
have really only done consistently, including the installation of Ceiling, Painting of wall,
laying tile floor and Bathroom waterproof applying.

I sincerely hope that this report will be helpful to young people as an idea for their
research, as an example or as an article for students studying in this field.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY OF CAMBODIA I3-GAR REPORT YEAR 2022-2023

1. INTRODUCTION
For the last few decades, the world has been turned toward to a completely modern
world by technology as we see mostly in city. High rise buildings grow more and more every
year. Alongside with great changes, Cambodia which is a small, attractive and developing
country in Southeast Asia, has been going toward days by days. Especially, in construction
sector which is one of the most important sectors in Cambodia, has improved so well and so
far. Besides this great development, Cambodia has faced some critical problems. One of
those problems is the lack of professional engineers for working on construction sector. To be
an engineer, a student needs to spend at least four years in school to gain knowledge on
theoretical engineering. However, it is not enough for students to be able to work on the
construction site without any experiences. It’s only possible until they have experienced on
practical work in site or site office. By seeing this critical problem, construction company
such as BilGreat Construction Co., Ltd in short BGC has given opportunities to many
students to let them practice their theoretical knowledges about engineering in their work
areas and learn new lessons that mostly are being regardless in school. This is one of the most
effective ways which will help develop on human resource in the country. Inconclusion, as
we have seen, internship program has played on an essential role in developing by pushing
students to be an expert, experience and discover resourceful people along with education.

3.2. Construction Security

Construction security refers to the measures taken to protect construction sites from
unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and other potential risks. It is crucial to have adequate
security measures in place to ensure the safety of workers, protect valuable equipment and
materials, prevent costly delays, and maintain the integrity of the construction project.

Here are some key aspects of construction security that I found out at construction
where I interned:

1. Perimeter Fence

2. Access Control

3. Surveillance Systems

4. Lighting

5. Alarm Systems

6. Security Personnel

7. Securing Equipment and Materials

8. Emergency Preparedness

9. Security cameras

10. The building construction was surrounded by green safety net.

4. INSTALLATION OF CEILLING
4.1 Tools and Material

4.2. Process of Installing the Ceiling

Installing a suspended ceiling, also known as a drop ceiling or false ceiling, can be a bit
complex but manageable with the right guidance. Here's a general step-by-step guide on how
to install a suspension ceiling:

➢ Gather the necessary tools and materials: typically need ceiling tiles, suspension wires
or channels, hanger wire, a tape measure, a level, wire cutters, and a drill.

➢ Measure and mark the layout: Use a tape measure to determine the desired height of
the suspended ceiling. Mark reference lines on the walls to ensure a level installation.

➢ Install the perimeter wall angles: Attach metal wall angle brackets to the walls using
screws or nails. These will serve as the support for the outer edges of the ceiling tiles.

➢ Hang the main runners: Attach the main runners horizontally to the ceiling using
hanger wires. These main runners will run perpendicular to the ceiling joists and
provide support for the cross tees and ceiling tiles.

➢ Install cross tees: Attach cross tees to the main runners at predetermined intervals.
Most cross tees have a tab that snaps into slots on the main runners, creating a secure
connection.

➢ Cut and position the ceiling tiles: Measure and cut ceiling tiles to fit the remaining
spaces at the perimeter and around lights, vents, or other obstructions. Place the tiles
onto the grid, ensuring they are properly aligned.

➢ Install additional components: Install any additional components, such as light

fixtures, air vents, or access panels, based on the specific requirements of your project.

➢ Finishing touches: Once all the ceiling tiles are in place and properly aligned, ensure
that all connections are secure and visually inspect the installation for any gaps or
inconsistencies. Make any necessary adjustments.

5. LAYING OF TILE FLOOR

5.1. Materials and Tools
For this Materials here refer to physical substance which are made from others raw
materials. In masonry works, materials that is obligatory are tile, sand, gravel, cement and
water. Normally, material characteristics are under controlled of QC.

➢ Sand is a raw material which we cannot lake of it in construction. Soft sand, also
known as builder sand, is used for bricklaying mortar, building foundations, for
paving slab, wall rendering. It is a smooth kind of sand and has cohesive properties.
The other type of sand is shape sand. It has a gritty feel to it. It is used in concrete and
can also be used for rendering wall and floors. Gravel is also a kind of needed
material. It has many sizes using in construction on demand. However, sand and
gravel before used, especially they need to pass fine and aggregate testing.

➢ Tiles are usually thin, square or rectangular coverings manufactured from hard-
wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, baked clay, or even glass. They are
generally fixed in place in an array to cover roofs, floors, walls, edges, or other
objects such as tabletops.

➢ Cement, In ancient time lime mortar is used for construction. However, since early
20th century Portland cement has been used the most commonly as binder in new
building.

➢ Water is one of the main admixtures in mortar mixing process, which is very
important in construction such as used for mixing of mortar, mixing of cement
concrete and also curing concrete. According to IS456:2000, water must be free from
salt, oils, acid and other substances that can cause iron corrosion. Also, impurities in
water can introduce unwanted silt and clay into concrete which reduce strength of
concrete by 25%.

5.3. Process of tile laying

Laying tile floors involves several steps to ensure a successful installation. Here is a
general overview of the process:

➢ Prepare the Subfloor: The subfloor needs to be clean, dry, level, and free of any
cracks or imperfections. Remove any existing flooring materials and make any
necessary repairs before proceeding.

➢ Plan the Layout: Before starting the installation, plan the layout of the tiles to
determine the best arrangement. This involves measuring and marking the centerline
of the room and dry-fitting the tiles to ensure they fit properly.

➢ Mix the Mortar or Adhesive: Depending on the type of tiles you are using, mix mortar
(for ceramic or stone tiles) or adhesive (for vinyl or other types of tiles) according to
the manufacturer's instructions. Use a trowel to spread the mortar or adhesive on the
subfloor.

➢ Lay the Tiles: Start at the centerline and begin placing the tiles one by one, pressing
them firmly into the mortar or adhesive. Use spacers to maintain consistent spacing
between tiles. Work your way outwards, cutting tiles as needed to fit around
obstacles or along walls.

➢ Apply Grout: Once the tiles are all in place and the mortar or adhesive has cured
(usually 24-48 hours), it's time to apply grout. Mix the grout according to the
manufacturer's instructions and spread it over the tiles, using a grout float to ensure
proper coverage. Remove excess grout with a sponge and clean the tiles.

➢ Seal the Grout: To protect the grout from stains and moisture, apply a grout sealer
after it has fully cured. Follow the product instructions for application and drying
times.

6. CONCLUSION
I completed my internship successfully; I can say that this importunity of internship
taught me many lessons and it is a good chance that improves myself and I learn from senior
architects and understand more about society. The internship is one of the beginnings of real
work for students to learn about the company and work. Since we all have already studied
about the theories in the classes so we cannot ignore this great opportunity of internship.
Indeed, we would get more than we expect because we all work with the professional
engineers who succeed in many projects. In the name of 13th generation of architectural
student at Institute of Technology of Cambodia, we would keep working hard and improve
ourselves to be a good student, be a responsible architect in the future to develop our
motherland to become glorious, and a good citizen for our society and for our country. This is
my great honor to be one of young Cambodian human resources to conserve and to develop
our country.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
