Calibration of Equipment & Measuring Instrument

1. Purpose
1.1. To define the process of controlling the calibration of Equipment and measuring instruments.

2. Scope
2.1. Applicable to all equipment and instruments and that requires calibration by DSBE Departments
or by External Provider.

3. References
3.1 ISO 9001: 2015 Clause 7.1.5, Monitoring & Measuring Resources.

4. Definitions / Abbreviations
4.1. DSBE: Dubai Ship Building & Engineering

4.2. QMS: Quality Management System

4.3. QA/QC: Quality Assurance / Quality Control

4.4. RFI: Request for inspection

4.5. External Provider: An approved supplier of DSBE qualified for the calibration

5. Responsibility
5.1. It is the responsibility of the concerned Department Supervisors to ensure that all relevant
testing, measuring and monitoring equipment are calibrated as often as required.

5.2. It is the responsibility of the Department Manager to ensure that the calibration takes place as
often as required.

5.3. It is the responsibility of the QA/QC Department to verify whether the equipment and instrument
that are in use in the yard is calibrated properly.

5.4. QA/QC Department will keep the calibration record of instruments and monitor the due date of
calibration.

5.5. QA/QC Department shall be kept all updated calibration certificates for reference.

5.6. QA/QC Department or Trade supervisors may be coordinate with External provider for
calibration.

5.7. Procurement Department is responsible for collecting the calibration certificates for hired
Equipments.

6. Procedure

6.1. Monitoring of measuring equipment must be visually checked by the User before use. The
visual check may include to identify:

6.1.1. Physical damage (wear and tear).

6.1.2. Equipment calibration due date label


6.1.3. Any damage to calibration sticker.

6.2. The equipment shall not be used, if any of the above checks are not adequately met.

6.3. Some equipment such as measuring tapes, rulers, and vernier callipers up to 200mm are not
calibrated but visually checked for wear and tear before each use. There are no records kept for
such visual checks of equipment.
6.4. The calibration of testing, measuring and monitoring equipment will be carried out in one of the
following ways:

6.4.1. By the User department.


6.4.2. By the Electrical Department.
6.4.3. By an External Provider

6.5. QA/QC Department shall maintain a calibration Log of equipment contains Device name,
Identification Number, Manufacturer, Range / Capacity, Certificate Number, Calibration Interval,
Calibration date, calibration Due Date.

6.6. For the calibration of Welding machines and Ovens, Welding supervisor will notify the Electrical
department by email with calibration log.

6.7. Calibration sticker should be there with Identification Number, Calibration date & Calibration Due
date.

6.8. If any equipment or instrument is scrapped, Lost and permanently damaged, Particular
department will notify to QA/QC Department to amend the calibration Log.

6.9. Calibration will reveal the correctness / deviations of readings with respect to a Master
Equipment. During calibration, if the equipment denotes readings which are outside the
acceptable range, then it is adjusted to ensure that readings are within the acceptable range. If
the adjustment is not feasible, It may recommend the equipment for repair or scrap
