PART A—(10 X 2 = 20 marks)
1. Let S= { ( 1 ,2 ) ,(2 , 1) } ;V=R2. Prove that it is linear span.

2. If V = A ⊕ B then show that dimV =dimA +dimB .

4. Show that T : R → R by T(x, y) = (x+2y, 2x-y, x+5y) is linear.

5. Let V= R and S= { (1,0) , (0,1)}. Check whether S is orthonormal basis or not.
6. Verify the Cauchy- Schwarz inequality for x=( 1 ,−1 , 3 ) and y= ( 2, 0 ,−1 ) .

11. (a) (i) Let W be subspace of a finite dimensional vector space V. Then W is finite
dimensional and dim(W)≤ dim(V). Moreover if dim (W) = dim(V) the V = W.
(ii) State and prove direct sum theorem. (8+8)

(b) (i) S={v 1 , v 2 , … … v n } is a linearly dependent set of vectors in V iff there exist a
vector v k in S such that v k is a linear combination of preceeding vectors
